I too noticed this today for the first time and have done a little testing to try and find what's going on.

After logging onto Google, I can promote a website from lower down in the rankings to top position. Having promoted a site, I then also see a button to remove it. If I click on remove, the site returns to its original positioning. If I then sign out of Google, any sites that I have promoted return to their original positions.

From this I would conclude that the facility is in essence a personal bookmarking facility, enabling you to create your own customised search engine listings, and I doubt whether it will have any effect on the overall listings.

Try it - see if you agree.

The big question is, does this only effect each individual persons results like an email spam filter, or will they use the collected data to shape the results as a whole ?

Hey, just noticed this morning that next to each site, there is a promote and remove button. What are these for? are they to organise search results just for yourself? or does clicking these buttons affect rankings globally?
I hope its the former, since u could just get all your friends to click "remove" for your competitors sites!!

can anyone shed any light on this?

Yes, Google has launched SearchWiki, a way for you to customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results. With just a single click you can move the results you like to the top or add a new site. You can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that you don't feel belong. These modifications will be shown to you every time you do the same search in the future. SearchWiki is available to signed-in Google users only.

The changes you make only affect your own searches.
We have written a post on this topic on our blog to continue the discussion on this feature. Please participate in that also.

It's all part of the newly launched SearchWiki, allowing you to personalise your own search results. The buttons will not affect searches by other web users.

    Taken from www.google.co.uk/support/bin/answer.py?answer=115764

"SearchWiki lets you customize your Google Web Search results by ranking, removing, and adding notes to them. You'll see your changes whenever you do the same searches while signed in to your Google Account, or until you decide to undo them. You can also see how other users have tailored any given search results page with their own notes and changes."

For a minute I though T had abandoned the algos and thought we could just vote our own sites to the top. Was just about to order a rapid fire mouse

Not sure what to think about it. I hadn't noticed it until i used search this morning.

So for now it's okay. The question is how long before they start using this data to tweak their algorithms?

does this do any effect on the real and current rankings or it just as they say that for your eyes only? Maybe it will have an effect on the ranking later specially if many accounts will be voting for the result to rank high. Can anyone disprove this?

Google has said the SERP changes are account based only. Meaning votes will not affect the real SERPs. Think about it - they would be utterly stupid to have these votes count, as anyone could control what shows up in the search with enough spammers and money.

I only see those Move Up and Down arrows in Chrome and not in Firefox.

And once every member has prefixed his Priorities, then a new website has no change of moving up, isnt it ?

I see the links in Opera. And just because it's not effecting ranks now doesn't mean in the future it won't. Google might just be collecting data now and seeing the abuse and how it might effect rankings if it were included in their algo. This is very interesting and imho...the biggest change Google has made to it's search engine in years.

It's just a part of Google Results Personalization, and won't affect the real ranking system which based on votes.
