"Investigate whether the traffic change affects the whole site or just a few pages. Configuration changes are likely to affect the whole site"

it was in the message in the webmaster tools. thats why i said i have made no changes to my site.

Make sure you aren’t indulged in any kind of webspam or link trading...Google is going really hard on webmasters employing illegitimate techniques to rank high

Here is Googler Matt Cutts helping you with more possible reasons for ranking drop:

    Hi gkhub,

Your site ranking can drop for various reasons:
    1. A competitor is ranking better.
    2. Your site has no new content over the past months.
    3. Your keyword is not stable, it was a trend.
    4. Google penalty's your site due spam
    Hope this helps you,

    Kind Regards,

    Maarten

    Hi gkhub,

If your keyword is a trend, and it will get up to 10,000 searches a month in that specific month, it may not last long. What I mean is, that a keyword like "Michael Jackson Dead?" will drop after a certain period of time, because it is not relevant to the current trends.

    Hope this helps you,

    Kind Regards,

    Maarten

You may have built unnatural links, or fast links, this can be one reason of decreasing your keyword rank.
