search friendly urls

    I'm trying to create search friendly urls

    localhost/domain/cat.php?id=4

    to

    localhost/domain/cat/4

    using path_info , apache look back facility and php explode function.
    But there is something that i am missing.
    In case, someone use this technique , please help me
    I am using :
    win 2000
    apache 1.3.x
    php 4
