Do all search engines give you listings in the same way or do you ahve to submit your site with a summary to some? I have information about robots and how they crawl your site for the metatags but this is in relation to google is it the same for other search engines? Paul paul@eroticdirectorysite.com
Every search engine has their own submission policies. Many search engines will find your site if it is linked to from other sites, some search engines need you to suggest your URL and others require more information. -- Nathan Enns
The BIG ones will find you (MSN, Google, Yahoo and Ask) and to be honest most of the smaller or second-tier engines will request an email address during submission which many seem to use to spam you. What you need is a couple of good links from sites that are indexed and crawled by Google and you should be good to go (just to get indexed). To make this easy, you could submit your site to a couple of free good directories.
Many smaller search engines do not spam you. Some don't even require an email address. If you are worried about SPAM, create a new email address just to submit your site. Then close the account after your submission. -- Nathan Enns
Some decent links from established sites worked quickly for me with google but yahoo seems to take a bit longer... i had to submit to them to be sure.
I have found that submitting an article to the top directories gets me indexed quickly. It seems difficult to get into MSN, but when I put out an article, I get indexed in MSN within a couple of weeks.
How much traffic do you actually get from MSN, or Yahoo for that matter? Most of my clients don't see any thing from those two, so we sometimes don't even bother checking to see if their site is indexed or not. If you can get indexed in Google you are doing everything you need to, IMHO.
Well, I must honestly say I'm not playing with the big boys yet. However, I do get some decent, targeted traffic from MSN. I never specifically worked to get into MSN, but I don't mind the extra traffic. My point was you may not get a lot of traffic, but I think it's worth writing an article. It's also been easier to get top ranking for my competitive keywords. I'm in the number one spot for my main keyword phrase in MSN but no where to be found in Google...yet.
Many search engines and I believe the ones that actually matter crawl the web and will eventually find your site. Other lesser search engines want you to pay to submit to them to be crawled. This just goes to show what nonsences they are.
