Hello Everyone, Our company are hoping to launch a search engine along side our other websites but we have a few questions. What is the best search engine script for us to use? We want something new and innovative. Also, what is the best way to make money from a search engine? Thanks Jonathan
Hi Jonathan, Maybe the following isn't what you're looking for but here goes anyway and I hope it'll be of help. Forget PHP 'seach engine' scripts. They might create a buzz around your site for 1-2 weeks, then they'll die a long and slow death with very little revenue. Particularly avoid scripts that pull results from other search engines. I don't know of any search engine script pulling results from google, msn or yahoo, that is doing well in revenue terms. The other way is to get yourself a free crawler and indexer and work with that. It means everything is customizable, from ranking the results, to the data you pull from pages to the way those pages appear on the page. Nutch is one such crawler / indexer. Of course the amount of work involved is one hundred fold. Keyword advertising is the main money making stream for search engines.
Thanks for the feedback, I have a design in html, and my coder asked what script to use, and I want to know what to tell him? I don't want a search engine that pulls results from others, and Nutch sounds good.
NUTCH is good. Its the closest thing to a complete package that you'll find. But you will need serious hardware if you start crawling past the capacity of the computers you have
How do you think search engines make money, look at which search engines do well and look at their business model.
Ok, well the money making isn't so important, but I want to know what script to use to get it up and running
In My True Opinion dont develop search engine.... Google,Yahoo,MSN,ASK and some little one are in the market, Try some thing new... Good Luck!
How about a search engine for events that are taking place in the UK, how easy could something like that be to develop? Thanks
More awkward than you think. There would be two ways to do it: 1. You manully enter all the events into a database / grab content from other 'event' websites and enter them into a database and then do simple searches on the database. You could even do this with mysql as the database rather than using any indexing / crawling software. 2. You create a super duper intelligent bot to crawl millions of webpages looking for keywords like 'events' and then deciding where the event is and when it is taking place and what it is about. Of course, No. 2 above hasn't been invented yet so good luck with that one
Ok, and what if I just want to create a search engine with some nice features? Doesn't matter if it makes loads of money, but just needs to have nice functions etc, what script or software should I use? Thanks
I'm not actually sure which scripts are used but I found these: http://www.wwwsearchsolutions.com/google.php http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/php.html and http://www.x10media.com/
Here's a small one page script I use that uses the YaHoo API. It shows image, web and news results on one page. You'll have to sigh up for a FREE yahoo Application ID to use it. Basic Code: http://www.smallmouthbass.biz/yahoometa/yahoometa3.php?view_source=1 Basic Code Example: http://www.smallmouthbass.biz/yahoometa/yahoometa3.php?q=helicopters&sa=Search How I'm using it: www.Golexa.com www.serpent.ws
You're going to build own search engine with crawler and database. Now at this time, no one can win with Google. So, it's most important how you display result different from Google, Yahoo or other search engines.
When building a search engine you need a server or thousands of pc's like Google search engine. You need a database where you place the site's being indexed and where to search for data. Next, is security issues should be resolved. You need to have a better algorithm than anyone. What kind of search engine? Image, Video, Flash, blog or general search engine? Maybe you can find it here. There are affiliated search engines that earns.
