When was the last time search engines were really revolutionized?

I'm talking about a big expansion, a change in the way we search and surf the web. I would guess that the last major change was becoming relevancy based.

I think there is a revolution that is about to crest in the world of search engines. Soon enough you will know it. Technology evolves, and search engines are past due by far. Today's search engines basically serve the same fundamentals as 15 years ago. What is there that we can change?

I think that the next major change in search engines will be the utilization of statistical referencing. By referencing statistics and incorporating them into search engine technology, this will allow users to pre-determine an indefinite amount of judgment while viewing the request results prior to engaging the website for a variety of purposes that serve profiting, surfing, safety, research, and others.

Statistical referencing can eliminate increase safety of general web browsing because typically higher ranked sites aren't scams, adware, malware, etc. This type of referencing can also improve the usability of the internet to users looking to take advantage of local business as well. For instance, a local business with better statistical information than others is probably going to have the best deal, service, etc. Marketers and website buildings can also bennefit from this technology by allowing them to accurately target the results they are looking for by referencing traffic, quality, and other various marketing statistics.

Do you all think it's possible that statistical referencing has a future in search engine development? :D

I actually think that search engines will continue to evolve in to a far more 'personal' approach. Here are a few thoughts:

-search engines knows a bit about you (location, age, interests, past searches)
-when you type in "what's the best pizza shop for me" it will know your location, past preferences (based on click throughs) and select the appropriate websites

-also, on image searching, pictures based on user analysis not keywords. (gwap - google it)
-for example, do a google image search for 'upset face' - only 30% are actuall upset - can't google have a simple vote system next to all those images?

I think too that searches will be based less on meta keywords, keywords etc, and far more on user reviews / comments and the like.

    Just a few thoughts

Those are some really good points, and I think you are right about them continuing to evolve. Personalization and integration out of the computer into our lives should be another step. I'd like to see them integrated better into products, and services. For instance, a search engine on my counter would be nice to find recipes, shows, etc...

Search engine has become very very powerful but the general users has not kept up in terms of unleashing the true power.

My take of it is that there needs to be user centric approach to search to make it easier to unleash the more advanced power. Yahoo's search assist feature is one step in the right direction.

I guess that the biggest challenge for Google & Co will be to find the most intersting websites for the users. not the most optimized by SEOs...
