None! Quite a few directories though. Which ones depends on the site.

None. I don't waste bandwidth being crawled by SE's that no one uses.

But directories... every directory that will have me that doesn't use redirected links.

There is no need to submit to search engines these days, they can easily find you through incoming links to your site, so just try to build some links to your site.

Yeh, i too think so infact there was never a need to do that since last 2-3 years. but its better to submit ur sitemap to google sitemap submission, it will help in indexing of website pages more appropriately.

Well I run a country specific search engine, so crawling websites doesn't always supply links, I have a suggest website page and around 67% of webmasters get indexed by suggesting a website.
Leaving it up to a search engine spider to find you seems a little slapdash to me, all it takes is one website down the line to duplicate a few pages and content and they get dropped off the search engines listings and then all the websites down the links pages onwards don't get found.
With the ammount of search engine spamming these days your leaving a lot to sheer chance.
My search engine has now indexed around twenty four million web pages and a simple search for links files produces thousands of Links but I feel that it should be the webmasters job to promote a web site and not a search engine spider.

Dave: I've just made a new site 2 weeks ago, pointed a few pr3 links to the site and the homepage is already cached by google and yahoo. So I didn't suggested the site to the search engines.

Are you the owner of a Australian search engine?

yes, much better that SE bots will find your site rather than submitting..link exchange will do, inorder for your site to be visible..

You can look up top ten or top twenty search engines to submit to and make up your mind from there.

Are directory listings mainly useful for boosting inbound (backward) links? If so, can someone recommend a site or service that does automated directory submits? I'm already well listed on the major SE's, but probably very few directories.

    thanks!

We I have an Australian search engine running in Beta mode, where it's just running the webspider and building the index, when it gets more than fifty million Australian webpages indexed I will be releasing it into the wild, so to speak.
I also have a New Zealand based search engine (www.linknz.co.nz) which has been running for just over a year now and during the last two weeks I have given the code to two other countries, so that they can set up a country specific search engine, with a webspider to index websites with.
At some stage the option is open to pool all the databases into one and then form a Southern Hemishpere covered search engine as well as the country specific ones.
I am presently working on a content related method of ranking webpages, it uses complex algorythms to work out the relationships between words, common words, simlar words and it forms results based on the search term and the actual content of the webpages.
So links into and out of a website will not be an accurate measure of a sites importance, it will be a measure of how good the content is which is the way forward in my eyes, because everyone is searching for good content that is related to what they wish to find.
Linknz is running this method of page ranking, it slows results down by around 2% which isn't bad and it is measuring various factors of content and pages visited against search terms to help tune the algorythms.
    All the best

Well I just had a visit to your website and the content is good, spyware should be gotten rid of and to help things out I have just sent my webspider the "Linknzbot" into your website so that it can be found by the users of my search engine.
Not sure what levels of visitors youll get but it can only help.
Your stats and log files should have an entry under User Agents for the visiting webcrawler.
