I read in a forum last night, that <h1> headers [HTML elements in web pages] are good for placement in search engine results. A search of google produced this article -- Designing for Search Engines. Does anyone know if this is still relevant?

They are probably not as valuable as they used to be, but I still would use them. If nothing else, it makes for good page layout.

All Heading tags are important. They tell your users text under the headline is important.

Search engines also see this and add weighting to the page for it.

Dont abuse it though, and it may now earn a penalty if manipulated via CSS
Remains to be seen on that issue however.

Behind title, keyword and content tags, I find them beneficial in properly identifying search engine phrasing.

I didn't read much through the link you posted, but I can tell you H1 tags are important part of SEO, matching the page title is usually the idea.

Yep - you should definitely include your main keyword for each page in H1 tags, as this helps the SEs identify your keywords, and consequently, your content. Once is enough, though - overdoing it may induce a penalty.
