Two post: Measuring SEO: Why rankings are worthless & Search engines rankings are not useless Two contradicting views are emerging as result of Google banning automated ranking checker tool. I am currently discussing this on UKBF and wanted you to share it with you folks in DP. A debate on this seems to be a good idea!
It all depends on your goals and strategies. And the type of site of course. If you are something like 'google' no one cares about rankings. Everyone knows you. But if you are just trying to sell your own hand embroidered doormats online, it is different. You might want to benefit from some free traffic. I'd say you need both, or at least a little bit of everything. 'Rankings are worthless' can only be said by site owners that do not rank well, but have used other ways to drive traffic to their site.
Thanks for sharing. Personally, I wouldn't risk my entire business in google. Too many people rely on google for their online business. If google one day goes bankcrupt (not that it will) or changes their algorithm drastically, then they will be doomed.
