    What i think is that an SEO practitioner should be well equipped with enough qualification, tools, tips and techniques that can help him to explore new trends on the web, can remain up to date with the modern technology and updates from the search engines and social networks. Qualification helps to polish the the experience. I guess the person should have read subjects like web engineering and optimization engineering. This will help them too.

    I think there is a minimum of graduation is required for any job application and hence in SEO it should be at least graduation in any stream and have a deep knowledge about SEO to get a good job in SEO.So the main requirement is knowledge about SEO and experience as well.

    Although there isn't any formal certification (yet), the industry is developing standards that at some point, like any other legitimate business, will include levels of qualification. Until then, you'll need to learn the fundamentals of web/search marketing such as basic content building, on and off page strategies, organic and paid traffic building, link building, social marketing and various other tasks.

    Once you've started to master enough concepts and feel comfortable that you can start working for others then you'll need to add services such as reporting, stat tracking, demographics, target markets, discovery, cost controls (ROI) and so on.

    You'll need to have people skills as well. Every client has a different expectation of what your work will do for them so you'll need to convey exactly what you can and can't do as an SEO/M. You'll also need to become somewhat of an expert on each clients business. It isn't a get rich quick business as some will have you believe, however it can be very rewarding when it's done correctly.

    A good level of intelligence will help a lot even when no basic qualification is required

    To be good at SEO you need to:

    - pay attention to details;
    - continuously update your knowledge about SEO (SEO is continuously evolving);
    - have some basic coding skills;
    - have problem solving skills;
    - have good communication skills;
    - have patience;
    - have the desire to participate on forums and share information;
    - have a computer, basic computer skills, and internet access;
    - in the States, you better have a good command of the English language and be able to communicate effectively in writing;
    - you should own a well optimized web site; and
    - you should have an established and completely satisfied list of clients that will vouch for you.
