I have been looking over methods to learn who can I SEO myself for my sites. All I read and learned till date, regarding SEO is that, building backlinks are the only thing we have to do to develop our search engine rankings. Is that correct? Or Am I missing anything?
SEO is split up into two main categories. On Page Optimisation - H1 Tags, Keyword %, Image Tags, URL, etc... Off Page - Relevant Link Building. http://www.seomoz.org/article/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization is quite good at explaining the basics.
hello icpathi, SEO is a vast knowledge and needs quite long experience to understand it better. Search engine optimization is process by which you wanted to get your website excelllent organic traffic and get ranked high in search engines. Basically you can start with Ebooks Right now! Good Luck Friend!
If SEO is only about building backlinks then I don't understand how so many sites get to the top of the search results. I think the algorithm used by the search engines is much smarter than that and I'm working on getting links from other sites, doing as much as I can to make my site friendly to people and spiders.
Thanks SEOBOT. But before starting up with paid eBooks, I suppose, I can execute all those excellent and 'interesting-to-do' optimizations techniques that are explained for free by many. And I have a very small doubt. I heard from some people stating that, "if you have an article that is a hot in today's world, then you would obviously receive some good traffic if your site is slightly SEO'ed." How's that possible? Say, there are many sites that are competiting for the first few positions. Then I can never come in top for any keywords related to that. Then how'll I receive traffic for my site from SE?
Yes, mainly links. You can do more or less what you want with a site and a webpage and as long as it has the best link profile (measurements are the only complicated bit in seo) then you will rank well. Sure other factors. but pick 10 sites for your keywords....that have the serp that you want to achieve....and 9 will have the best links. Sure there are exceptions and there are always sites that you think "why the hell do they rank so well?"
Try some internal linking mixed with a good combination of rich content. Get into blogging if you do not already. an onsite, SEO'ed blog is good too. Keep the content fresh and rich. Make sure that any blog you post in pings out to major players in the blogsphere. Again, I highly recommend an onsite blog to ensure this. I can post an article in my blog and literally have in in Google's search results within 15 minutes or less and rank a number 1 position within 2-3 hours if the article is unique enough.
