What are the market shares of the big search engines (USA)? I found these numbers:
    Google 36.4%
    Yahoo 30.6%
    MSN Search 16.5%
    AOL Search 8.9%
    Ask Jeeves 5.5%

This was the situation in March 2005, does anyone have more up to date figures?

    Google Sites: 34.6%
    Yahoo! Sites: 32.0%

Interesting numbers, but then where do all those Yahoo searchers click? I've developed dozens of sites for clients and for myself over the years and Google always sends 3-5 times more traffic than Yahoo from keywords ranked similarly on both sites. These numbers would suggest the referrals should be about equal which I just don't see. Maybe Yahoo searchers click on Ads more than organic results?

I'm of the opinion that MSN inflates their numbers. Here is what I mean. If you have a hotmail account....login...then hit the logout button. It redirects you to msn.com.

I wonder how much of their traffic is coming from users that do this? I kind of find it a cheap trick myself.

    Great, thanks!
I'm glad to see that there's a lot more competition between the search engines in the USA. In the Netherlands, Google has a market share of around 75%.

those are Nov 2004 numbers, 2005 numbers are:

    Google 39.8% Change of: +5.2%
    Yahoo 29.5% -2.5%
    MSN 14.2% -1.8%
    Time Warner 8.7% -.4%
    Ask Jeeves 6.5% +1%

and isnt Time Warner search actually Google? that would put google at 48.5% and growing...

I wonder the same thing myself. Except for the smallest sites with low traffic and negligible vintage, I have not come across webmasters claiming that their Yahoo numbers were higher than their google numbers. Where do the Yahoo searchers go?

I think it really depends on the subject genre of the sites. Yahoo tends to get a younger crowd who seem to be looking for entertainment related information.

Some demographics of actual searches would be very interesting.

One possible "inflation" might be all of the searches done in Yahoo profiles and groups - people looking for folks to spam ;)

But the other thing that's interesting though, is that it proves that you should not necessarily ignore Y! and MSN - combined, they have a larger market share

well if you have an international store or that kind of business where any user is important no matter where, you should think that those figures are kind of flawed in worldwide search engines, yahoo japan or baidu/sina and sohu china rule grand part of the world. less than half of the alexa world top 20 websites are in english. but i guess u most interested where the americans are looking for...

You right about that fact. It’s funny that these sites are at the top of the list yet I’ve never heard of them.

I think the reason you dont get more clicks from Yahoo is they have better placement of Ads. (In General) Yahoo populates the top 3 spots with overture ads whereas most google searches have ads only appearing along the side. This is just a theory and yes I do know that sometimes google ad results are listed on top.
