Search engine friendly URLs

We have a module on one of our websites that converts the product titles or category titles to the URL. However it also adds the category and product ID on too e.g:

    your-product-title-c-1-p-14923.html

    instead of

    your-product-title.html

Is there a major disadvantage of the first format over the second?

if it's already in your url elsewhere, eg. if it goes domain.com/category/product-category...etc it might appear spammy. And with a longer title with random product IDs in there, it becomes less memorable and less user friendly. Wouldn't worry about it too much though IMO, there are plenty of sites out there with far worse URL structures.

It sounds like you are using zencart. We had the same urls for our website and we had no problem getting those pages ranked #1 across all of the top search engines. Ideally those category id's wouldn't be in there, but it is not a big issue. If you don't like how it looks, just do mod rewrites for category urls.

First we have to change into search engine friendly urls using the mod_rewrite.Search engine friendly urls rank high in search engines over the second.

You can definitely change it but there is no problem at all continuing with the same

Actually its xcart on that website, but i think thats a similar system. I don't really care about the look of it, just wondered if it would be of benefit SEO wise to remove them.

Thanks everyone for your replies, i think i will leave them as is right now. Maybe do a mod rewrite on them later on when i have more time...
