How do i make Joomla search engine friendly ?

As you know, the default Joomla installation is bad at producing SEF URLs. I intend to use Joomla for a very important site.

Also, is there any plugin for Joomla that resembles Digg.com voting system ?

There have a few SEF components which can help you make Joomla search engine friendly(SEF URLs).
Joomla SEF Patch is one of them.
NOTICE: this patch doesn't alter the URL's (no other categories available) but improve's the joomla core code into good SEO code

Or you could go for a paid one. It's called Saki sef component i think. More stable then the free OpenSEF.

Thankyou for your responses. I am looking into OpenSEF and will let you know how it works out.

OpenSEF is nice to use, but the problem is that if you site is going to have a lot of pages, you will discover that opensef makes several ULRS to your article. This again, leads to that many of your articles are not accessible.

That would not be a problem since I am planning to use Joomla mainly for a site that gives out weekly or monthly updates depending on the need. It will not be a news website.

Artio JoomlaSEF should work for you just fine. You just need to install the component into Joomla and it will automatically enable SEO for your url.:D

I noticed that, too which is obviously not good. But that's not just the case of OpenSEF.

One of the reasons for multiple SEF url's for an article can be using that same article in multiple contexts like displaying latest articles, top read articles, most rated articles etc which may sometimes cause several Itemid instances to be assigned to an URL. As a result, each URL will be treated as distinct content, and a separate SEF URL will be generated. One way to avoid that happening is by creating menu items to link to each of the categories of your Joomla content.

Another reason for multiple SEF URL's can be a non-core content module where the Itemid value is inaccurately calculated. Therefore, I'd always suggest testing a custom content module before installing it on a production website that has SEF enabled.
