Do you know of nay tool or study that links to the percentage of visitors you can get based of SE position and monthly volume of the keyword. I am looking for something like 1st position 40% of all seaches second 20% third 10 4h - 8% etc... based on some stats I know its not going to be hard and fast. still something is better than nothing Thanks
You were actually pretty close with your estimates. Please refer to this thread http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1498712
Thanks, I think I need a drink now.....and a few more backlinks.... 1 42.3% 2 11.9% 3 8.5% 4 6.0% 5 4.9% 6 4.0% 7 3.4% 8 3.0% 9 3.0% 10 2.8%
Distribution of clicks based on position in the search engines can vary. I compared the stats given above with real stats from my website, using the Google Adwords keyword tool (global monthly searches for exact match) and the number of clicks I achieved for a keyword in a given position. Here are my results: Position 1: 31.9% Position 2: 26.3% Position 3: 23.4% Position 4: 12.2% Bear in mind that it is only a small sample. But it is interesting to note that the difference between positions 1 and 2 is not as wide as I thought it would be given the average stats you find online (as quoted by a poster above). Also, my traffic for that keyword only starts to drop significantly if I drop to position 4. I just noted that the top 4 positions above eat up 93.8% of all the traffic for that keyword (depending on whether you think the Google keyword tool is accurate or not), which is a little excessive! But having looked at the results, I can also see that the searcher will certainly get what they are looking for from the top four results for that keyword as they are all highly targetted and provide reasonable content (including mine of course!). I will continue to do more testing on this and post back any more results I can find.
Thanks for your reply simpseo. It's hard to be accurate though when you consider that your serps may not be the same across all datacenters. If all your traffic is coming from the United States and google.com then I guess you can say it with more certainty. But I agree with you, I'm always trying to aim for top 3 at the very least. I think they have the large % of the traffic.
dcristo, This is what I will divulge about my site and the keyword it ranks for: The rankings are based on google.co.uk search results when the searcher either selects "search the web" or "pages from the uk" (both results are the same). I appreciate that it can be hard to be accurate but I just thought I'd throw some of my real stats out there if anything just to show that any stats are not going to be 100% reliable.
Thank you for the info. Another thing to consider is the split between natural SE results vs adwords. I seen estimates more along the lines of visitors age group. Some stats saying more 40% goes to adwords especially for 50+ age users. for younger crowd its close to 20%. Another curve ball for the matrix. I agree with HGC . I need a drink and lot more backlinks.
PPC accounts for much less then 40% of total clicks. That would suggest it's getting a similar number of clicks as the #1 organic result, which would not be the case. I can't find the article right now, but I think it's closer to 5-10%. I'm not a PPC guy so don't quote me on that.
I've never heard a stat as high as 40% for adwords, for any demographic. It's usually a rather miniscule percentage, but for ecommerce, they are usually interested buyers. So you're buying smaller, more quality traffic.
See google analytics where keywords and position and clicks can see. I think 1 position gets more than 50% of search click
In analytical position report they use the clicks you get as the baseline. not entire search. I don't recall where i seen the split between natural results vs adwords. Aji
