Well if nothing else this "Scroogled Period" is giving me an opportunity to review my traffic stats from MSN, Yahoo! and other sources. I'm happy to see that it's not insignificant traffic either. The breakdown looks something like this: MSN: 26% of total traffic Yahoo!: 24% of total traffic Other sources (incl linkpartners): about 6% of total traffic That would leave Google SE generating about 44% of total traffic to my websites. Significant but not totally dominating. Who really knows how this will all turn out. If Google dropped index data or their algo's just need fine tuning then perhaps the "Best is yet to be..." This is the perspective I choose to hold through this challenging period. How dominant is Google to your website traffic..? More than half..? Maybe time to diversify..? What other avenues of traffic should we be looking at..?
The answer to that question depends I believe in part on the nature of your site. However the conventional list includes: 1. Pay Per Click advertising. 2. Conventional media advertising. 3. Establish your expertise by publishing articles both on and off the web. These articles and the links from them should help the SEs, but they also should drive targeted traffic to you site. I'm sure others can add to this list, but these are the three items that immediately come to mind for me.
Thanks Compar, I think I've paricipated in items 1 & 2 on your list but could you be more specific about "publishing articles both on and off the web..." particularly "off the web" in item 3..? Off the web like in news media publications..?
Well apparently my original post's relevancy to Google was'nt direct enough (thanks Shawn!) so I'll rephrase it here since I was hoping to get feedback by those directly affected by this recent Google update. In other words... Seems like while alot of us are waiting for the third wave re-indexing of the SERP results by Google apparently unfolding over the next few weeks we could be looking at other Google or non-Google resources to help make up for the traffic deficit during this period. If you lost ranking in Google SERPs during this update I'd be interested to know what if anything, anybody here is doing to help make up for the deficit. Are there other Google avenues to pursue..? So far I've heard: 01-submit website to Google News 02-submit website to Froogle 03-do more PPC advertizing 04-write articles Has this update caused anyone to re-think their Google Dance stradegy..?
All of these really shoud be done if approporiate anyway, regardless of any updates. I think google should give out specific major update dates, so the whole web community can go on holiday and come back when its done
I think google shouldnt mess up its algo near holidays. do it middle of summer or some other useless time of the year.
Go on holiday... whats that..? I actually got a few of those suggestions from Compar one of the DP forum posters I've learned from here. I agree that Google could notify the web community so everyone does'nt freakout all at once. I mean there are some webmasters out there probably making major seo changes to regain SERP because of this update. If this is in fact a google database glitch then they'll be at it all over again in a few weeks...
Yes, by "off the web" I do mean in conventional media. Again depending on the target market for your site you might submit articls to your local newspaper or you might submit articles to specific trade journals. This isn't about articles, but simply "off web advertising", there are people in my town driving very noticable vehicles, like Volkwagen "bugs" or Hummers that have their website information and name prominently painted all over them. This seem particularly true for Sports Betting and Poker sites.
