    Josh:

I didn't mean that those teachers who leave the public education system because it is demoralizing to both teachers and students leave to work in private K-12 schools. Many of them leave to work in related, or even unrelated, fields.

I had two decent teachers in high school. One was a Calvinist minister and real-estate tycoon, the other was a cowboy and author.

People who teach all of their lives tend to have nothing to teach.

Police are terrible at preventing crime. The main tasks of the police are to record crimes and attempt to arrest the guilty, neither of which does a lot of good for the victims.

It's basically a system predicated on two ideas.

#1. If you've done something bad, you'll likely do it again, so we need you away from the public for a while.

#2. If you've done something bad, you deserved to be punished, so you, and people who see your punishment will be less likely to do it again.

And yet with the way prisons are going, both of these are falling by the wayside. Our prisons are choked, so we let people out early. Our prisons are also becoming more and more like hotels, so people don't -fear- going there.

Not too worry, soon we will implement Sharia law. That will put the fear of punishment back into people!

Yaknow will, at this point, I'm not sure if this is a general tirade against muslims, or if you think I want that, or that you think that my disappointment in the prison system is equivalent to wanting Sharia law in your eyes, or... if your post is meant to convey something else entirely... so I'm not sure how to respond.

It was a general jab at people who want to make prisons worse. I don't really believe that you would be happy with Sharia law, but I wanted to show the logical extension of that idea.

It's interesting to me how many of us -- myself included -- share some common beliefs with the Muslims. For example, I believe that murderers should receive the death penalty. In my case, I believe that would make prison more humane and effective for the remaining prisoners.

    "Logical Extension" argument. Right.

I don't believe in making prison worse than it was when it worked. I just think it's been 'made better' incorrectly and for far to long.

To be clear. I am not for allowing prisoners to harm eachother when it can be prevented. I am not against allowing prisoners to earn money which they can use towards luxuries or an education by performing labor.

What I am against is them getting legal degrees for free, or doing nothing but riding on the tax payer's dollar. I am against them getting luxuries without somehow earning them. The ability to have chunky peanut butter is something they should have to buy with good behavior and the money they earned pressing license plates, or breaking rocks or doing road construction. I am against them viewing Playstations as the luxury, and access to education many law abiding Americans can't afford as the given.
