This is a markup question rather than actual page coding - so I hope I am in the right section for my question. I'm currently trying to get to grips with this by experimenting with a few existing pages on the site. It appears to be going fairly well, as when I check it through with the Google Rich Snippets checker, most of it shows as being picked up OK. But there is one area where I'm not sure if I'm right or not. I've come on to the forum as there are few actual working examples online yet for me to ponder, apart from the ones that Schema.org provide and that get repeated everywhere. The question: - Using the VideoObject class, I've followed the Schema.org example and I can see the class is being picked up in the checker, as is the video title. My problem is that I'm not sure if the video content coding itself should also show - because it doesn't - although I'm getting no error warnings. As the video content is embedded from YouTube, is there a URL that should be added over and above that contained in the embedding code? Or is it a case that the content coding doesn't show when it concerns a video? It's puzzling me as other coding such as photo URLs etc do show up. Or am I missing something obvious ... which is not unknown with me!? It's my first attempt at this style of markup and I've tried getting some idea by looking at other formats - but no real answers when I've tweaked long those lines. As other pages on the site also carry video content, it is something that I would like to understand.
I wouldn't lose too much sleep over that. Google can't index video anyway (because its not text) so it is probably skipping over it.
Cheers sarahk, thanks for replying, I have to admit that thought hadn't occured to me - it could well be the case. I originally posted as I wondered if anyone else had the same result or had managed to get some (or any) indication that the Rich Snippets checker had picked up the actual video embedding code.
That said they have a page about video here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=162163
Thanks once again sarahk, I did look around the Google support area but I didn't discover that page (new glasses required perhaps) - I do appreciate the link. Does that mean then that despite being part of the schema.org markup 'committee of three' and agreeing a VideoObject class or type, Google itself doesn't recognize the schema.org video markup? Although, on that page, an explicit link is given to schema.org, it also goes on to say that - "Google recognizes two video markup formats: Facebook Share and Yahoo! SearchMonkey RDFa"? It doesn't add or make any note that it can recognise the schema.org one as well. I would have thought that when the schema.org link was added to the page, some mention would have been made that it was an alternative video markup format to the other two - if that was the case. I feel a 'workaround' coming on.
On the register your interest form they ask you what type of snippets you are using and schema.org was on the list. The other options were flawed IMO so hopefully schema.org gain wider support. Do you want to post a link to the feedback page for your video page (all the guff is in the url after you submit)
I've not registered my interest with the form, just yet. As I'm still feeling my way with this kind of markup, I wanted to make sure I got it right before taking that plunge ... mainly because when I do start to do it site-wide, the bulk of the pages are dynamic and I need a reasonable grasp of all that is relevant to the site/content to fit it in best (and easiest) with the code and db structure. It's also why I'm asking my video question now, before rattling on with it rather than have a major 'redo' later. So ... I'm experimenting on a few stand alone pages to find problems. I have looked at extensive markup before but thought it was rather hit and miss as to how well different formats worked with the various search engines, so I agree with you that schema.org will hopefully gain wide support as it comes from a big three 'think tank' ... I thought, 'Go for it!' I did look through the interest form and saw that schema.org is listed and I've no problem going for that and submitting it - if I could be content that the video aspect is OK. Once I get to that stage, I'll be happy to post a link to a video feedback page.
