Why not use a net domain instead.

The .ORG domain name used to be exclusively for a non-profit organization but they have lifted all the barriers because of the limited choices of .com available. It ranks pari passu with the other TLD. There are too many people who have registered the .org domain names so it would not be possible to go back to the past again.

However, if you are worried, try looking for some other TLD.

Even when they have changed their policies in the past, ICANN's policies have usually only affected new registrations anyway, so it's very unlikely you'll ever run into a problem with a .org domain. It's been open for quite some time now, but most people will associate it with an organization. This may seem confusing to some people, if you create a commercial site, even though (Ironically) Hosting any other type of website on a .com (Commercial) extension is perfectly acceptable.

If you fear a .org domain though, why not try one of the many, virtually untapped (By Comparison) International TLDs? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains

There is nothing to worry about. The number of registrations that occur would make it very difficult to go through every one to check non-commercial status. As a side note, there have never been restrictions on who can purchase .org domain.

From the PIR website (they manage the .org TLD):

Seriously? I could be wrong, But, I remember registrars saying "Must be a Non-Profit Organization" in the past. Anyone else remembering this? I'm just curious at this point.

My advice: Just get a .com site. Prevention is better than cure!

IMO .ORG is fine since many sites are using .org in their domains. They can't take back domains from all big sites which are making $xxxxx per month ;).

Some registrars may have tried to impose their own rules, but those quotes came from PIR. PIR manages the .org tld just like .com and .net are managed by Verisign. At the top level of control, .org has always been unrestricted.

Once you have a .org, they won't take it away based on new criterea.

This happened some years ago with .edu domains

The people who already had them could keep them.

.cn is not $79. I buy them for $0.50 now, but they used to be just 15 cents each.
