Scam or not? Websites with hundreds of visitors in first few months

Hi All,

I noticed many times on the DP marketplace that people are selling practically new websites, not older than couple of months, that are getting hundreds of visitors daily.
Are these people trying to scam buyers? Or is it really possible with white hat SEO techniques to achieve such a results?

Did anyone have experience with such websites?

 

I once owned a fansite, that averaged 150,000 hits per day after a few months. Bandwidth restrictions made me kill it, however.

 

Sure, some people are lreally good at getting visitors.

I would check the traffic sources though. If they are all direct or from one or two referrals, you might suspect trickery.

 

It's not impossible. A hundred visitors a day is achievable especially if you expose your website on social media sites.

It is possible if you are doing promotion of your website. The reason why you do not entertain such thing is they are just getting visitors, but not a quality visitors they are. So avoid such offers. You must purchase only quality website for long term goal.

 

no its no possible only site can have up to 100 visitors a day anything higher and the owner is lying I know I have over 1000 domains never had more than 100 visitors to any site so I know more than 100 visitors is impossible ok OP thanks for posting this thread good idea to keep a lookout for unsuspecting members might fall for these scams no one wants to get scammed is a very sad situation in the world today with all the scammers trying to earn a quick buck and take our money so its so nice of you to post this thread thanks again OP if I could read this thread for the first time again I would just like playing a video game or hearing an album for the first time it would truly be a learning experience and so I just want to thank you again OP for posting this brilliant thread I'm sure it changed the lives of many and the consequences will never be the same

 

This is utter nonsense. Of course a new site can get good traffic. Just because you've never had a site get more than 100 visitors a day only proves that you haven't been able to do it.

Now that doesn't mean some aren't scams.. Some are, but not all are. Just do some due diligence and you can easily determine if a site is the real deal. It's not difficult.
There a really all kinds of sneaky ways to get 100 visitors per day, and those sites are worthless, but there are legit ways too.

There is no yes or no answer to this question. Do your research and don''t rely on everyone else to ID a scam for you.
If you don't know how to determine if it's a scam, then the answer is simple. Don't buy. You need to learn more first.

 

First of all they are selling to make money, they are good at creating websites and generating traffic we shouldn't take it as a scam you pay for the service they offer you, after a while they are probably getting it faster and faster so they keep creating and selling new websites.

 

Of course its possible, very possible.

Check the sites history, try get a hold of old cached versions, check alexa data check blekko data

Do as much homework before buying - ask webmaster for copy of analytics or awstats

 

Our sites average about 500-700 unique hits a day, using Google analytics is the best way to track this for free. If you want to have your analytics info available to everyone I suggest signing up for Quantcast. This will show demographic info about the site so you can get a basis of what its actually worth

 

Game sites and entertainment sites tend to get visitors quicker. But it doesn't mean they are profitable sites or niches. They can be, but not always. Do a good research on a niche you're planning to buy a site in. Go for what pays well.

 

Totally, I owned a PTC site once, and the first day I got 4,000 members. I made almost no money from the site, but it was easy to get visitors when you pay them to come.

 

Its not difficult to get a few hundred visitors after a couple of months for a new site. Social sharing & google traffic is pretty easy to get. And believe me, this is not much.

 

I agree with shadoze, one can drive traffic to a site via legal as well as "illegal" means. Just like you can do white-hat or black-hat SEO.
What's more important, though, is what kind of traffic it is. Say, your site is called greatwebsite (dot) com, and it used to be a porn site. So, if you buy this domain for a furniture company, I guess such poorly targeted traffic will not do you any good.
As some people have already said here, see the analytics for the site.
Also, I'd get some rank checking software and see for what words the site had been showing up, there may still be some records available.

If I can summarized everything into one sentence then it would be "It's possible for website to receive hundreds of visitors daily in first month by doing just white hat seo, but such sites still should be consider risky to buy, as the traffic is usually low quality".

Anyhow, I will still avoid buying websites that are just a few months old... If anyone had positive experience trading these type of sites, please let us now here

 

It's very possible, if you do all the right marketing and seo...I've done it before.

 

yes thats possible, many of site url i know, and getting thousand of visitors....in 2 months
without seo efforts only with unique work

 

It is possible but I have seen some scams on Flippa and DP where people will whack a high price on the basis of the high traffic but that traffic can temporarily be fixed and bought from traffic sellers which would boost up the monthly traffic and gain a higher price.

Just use logic - If you have a gut feeling it might be fake then move onto the next one

 

I'm always a bit sceptical, when someone tries to sell a new site with xxx daily hits. I mean.. if things work out as planned and you are getting more and more traffic - then why sell instead of monetizing what you have? To me, this indicates that the generated traffic is pretty useless for the target audience of the site but perhaps i'm missing something..?
