Hi everyone, I got a letter this morning from "The Domain Registry of America". What was quite an official looking letter, stating that my domain was "about to expire" (which is actually May 23rd next year) - and that I should fill in the form at the bottom of the letter and return it to them to make sure that my domain does not expire. The letter is actually well constructed, and is intended to look like an ICANN notification. The price that I had to either pay by credit card or send them a cheque for was £18 ($36) for my domain for 1 YEARS RENEWAL!!!!!!!!!! (and its a .com ) (By the way, my registrar is actually GoDaddy, and bulk rates mean my cost is 'slightly' lower LMAO) Its scary that these scammers who obviously send out hundreds of thousands of these letters (if not millions), are actually making money out of it - and people who dont know better are being RIPPED OFF by these people. I mean who goes through all those whois documents looking for companies to rip off..... Anyway, just though I would share that with you all MOG
That's a pretty cheap scam. Every year I get a whole bunch of letters in the mail saying "I need to register my domain and the cost will be $190 for 1 year. Otherwise, you might lose your valuable domain"....LOL...I guess NooBs might fall for that because it looks kinda official.
i get something different i think its like ICS.NET or something they claim and they send me a "bill" for like 30$ but on the backside it says "this is not a bill, this is a solicitation" or something like that lol, but it has my domain info on it so i don't know if this would be considered a scam or how i would report crap liek that, i get it like once a month.
yep i got one too. They are based in england so shall we have the first digitalpoint "send the boys round" meeting? we could all meet up in the morning get really drunk and then go and explain to the "domain registry of america" that we dont want their services Who is up for that?
LMAO!!! Im up for that anytime!! It'd have to be a good sesh beforehand but it would be bloody funny, having a dozen drunk dp webmasters showing up complaining about their spam mail!! did you get yours this morning too? cheers mog
This reminds me of an incident my dad had years back, he used to like entering Sweepstakes and Contests, in fact he once won a new EAGLE Auto, plus several other prizes.... But one time dad got this letter stating he won a Piano, and all he had to do was send $39 for shipping........ Dad sent the $39 and soon his piano arrived, it was about 3 inches long..... and we would today call it a Harmonica..... it might of been worth $2 if that LOL
Yeah i always get the ones talking about, my relative died and im the only last survivor and i suppose to get all this money........ yeah right pffftttt.......... Just junk this and forget about all that crap.
I get these all the time. Its a bit sneaky in my opinion. They are not the only ones that do it though.
I used to work for a large hosting company that also was a domain registrar. I used to overhear the sales people talking to customers all the time that got ripped off from these guys. There are a lot of people out there that are getting hit. I just got a similar one in the mail yesterday, only for search engine submission renewal. It looks like a bill. For $65 they submit you to the search engines. total scam.
Wow, thanks for warning me. I haven't seen a letter like this yet but who knows, maybe I will some day.
You wouldn't believe how many of these I have received. It's sad even thinking about how many people actually pay them, because it does look semi-official.
