    Definitions of racism

    1. The belief that human races have distinctive characteristics which determine their respective cultures, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule or dominate others.
    2. Offensive or aggressive behaviour to members of another race stemming from such a belief.
    3. A policy or system of government based on it.

    Racist behaviour may include:

    * Physical assault and harassment
    * Verbal abuse, threats, derogatory language, ridicule, stereotyped comments
    * Racist propaganda eg symbols, signs, graffiti
    * Incitement of others to behave in a racist manner
    * Refusal to cooperate with other people because of their colour, ethnicity, religion or language
    * Institutional racism which often unintentionally disadvantages or marginalises less dominate ethnic and cultural groups eg biased policies, rules or curriculum.

    Racism may be direct or indirect, individual or institutional:

    Direct racial discrimination happens when someone is treated less fairly than someone else in a similar situation, because of their race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin. For example, if a school will not hire a staff member just because of his or her race or ethnicity. Indirect racial discrimination can happen when a policy or rule treats everyone in the same way, but has an unfair effect on more people of a particular race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin than others. For example, a rule that says that students may not wear anything on their heads could result in discrimination against students whose religions require headwear.

    The first definition can be evidenced when we consider the views of White Supremacists and Jim Crow Laws (which legislated the belief that Whites were entitled to more civil rights than others). The underlying assumption is that one race - the white race - is superior to all others. Laws based on this belief (e.g. Apartheid in South Africa) reflect racism. People who ascribe to this belief are then, racist.

    The second definition leaves greater room for discussion and debate. This broader definition tells us that "discrimination" (treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit) or "prejudice" (a preconceived preference or idea) allows that people of any race can be labeled as racist and any biased (def: an unfair act or policy stemming from prejudice) acts to be categorized as racism.

    Also Known As: racialism, racial discrimination

    Examples: The teen who verbally or physically attacks another simply because he is of a different race can be considered to be engaging in a racist act, whether he is White or Black, Asian or Latin. Beliefs that all people of another race (be they White, Black, Latin, Asian, etc.) are bad, evil, less than, reflect racism. Of key importance is the idea that racism and racist behavior is not owned by any one group.

    :(

    Probably not many... which is odd, because there are black Italian nationals.

    It reminds me of a quote from Simon Amstell from NMTB when he was asking a judge on strictly come dancing why all the black contestants were voted of first, He said;
    "are the audience more racist this year? or is it just that black people aren't very good at dancing?"

    that comment in its self is racist.. just because there are no black people there makes it racist?? not being racist is not caring what colour or religion someone is...

    a white man says the N word to a black man and gets punched in the face, a black man says white trash to a white man and the white man laughs it off.

    i say both men are racist.

    So what is your explanation for there not being a single black person on either team? Coincidence? or is it that black people just aren't very good at sports? (by the way, before you erupt in feigned outrage, the last bit was sarcasm)

    NB; racism has nothing to do with religion.

    Which is odd, because, in Italy at least, there are a lot of black Italian nationals eligible for participation in the national team.

    Racism is pretty prevalent in the world today. Soccer draws all of them together.

    Italy has a Sub-Saharan African population of 0.41% and the Ukraine has less than 0.1%. You should probably look to see if the minority Romanians and Belarussians or Crimean Tatars are fairly represented.

    A lot of the world has come a long way, we have a president in the US who was raised by his Irish American mother and an Indonesian step father. 50 years ago there was much concern about an Irish American President and that wasn't even raised this time. :D

    To get rid of racism, we just need to get rid of the Tea Baggers and the Republican party
