The opening night of the play 'Satanic Verses' in Postdam near Berlin Germany has been peaceful. The play is based on Salman Rushdie's book "The Satanic Verses"

Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa -- or religious decree -- in 1989 calling on Muslims to kill Rushdie.

The general secretary of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, called for Muslims to remain calm and engage in a "critical and constructive dialogue" about the issues the play raises. But he also said "Freedom of expression and of art is important but offences against what is sacred in a religion is not something we value," he told RBB public radio.

The Satanic Verses is a novel by Salman Rushdie's fourth that was first published in 1988. The Satanic Verses was inspired by the life of Muhammad. The title refers to what are known as the satanic verses. According to early Muslim biographies of Muhammad, Muhammad was tricked into revealing these verses as part of the Qur'an by Satan.

There won't be as much trouble over this one as much as previously when the satanic verses novel was written.
People have found newer things to get angry over.

That and fitna and much else.
People forget old stuff when new stuff is before them. Basic psychology.

It is just a fiction book to be read as such and nothing more.

Many people fail to differentiate fiction from fact and get worked up over it.
If their faith is so strong that a little fictitious book hurts it, maybe these extremists should be rethinking the depth of their faith.

Wonder if they did read up on their own religion book or just react as what others have done. If others burn cars saying that that book is blasphemous, they too start burning cars. Wonder how many of those that protested against the cartoons actually seen the cartoons in the first place or just react to hearsay.

Probably groupthink and herd mentality. People should learn to think and reason by themselves and not follow what the leaders or instigators are doing.

The extremists have a lot on their plate between fitna, cartoons, mohammed teddy bears and actually commiting terrorist attacks.

Maybe they forgot about the "The Satanic Verses"? It's been a long time.

The herd gets together on Fridays
