Shouldn't really be an issue (think about how many blogs out there use the same theme).

That being said I still like to make all of websites look different and have a slightly different feel... it allows me to better see what works and what doesn't.

Same content will get you a huge penalty from google. Make sure they both have different content.

Incase both domains are using same directory then it would be fine, but what if you simply redirect .in to .com?

When you put up same website on a different domain, targeting a specific geographic area.... Put up a sitemap of the .in TLD on the .com sitemap's index file and robots.txt.

This claims to the search engine that both websites are coming from same publisher. On the top of that, claim the website for different geographic areas in Google Webmaster tool.

You wont face any penalty for duplicate content in this case.

put geo IP redirect on your both sites. and you will be on no problem.
Ip form USA should go to example.com
and Ip from India should go to example.in
this is best thing you can do.
you will not get any problems.

It's called having duplicate content if you're using the same content on both sites. But, if its different, then you're fine.

If everything is same why do you have two different names and sites? what purpose it serves ? It is better to give differential look and content to any one of the two.

If both domains have the same content in the same language, you should redirect one of them to the other.

Same design & look no problem but content is same then change your newly launched website content or you can redirect .in to .com...
