Yes they can. As long as someone has not payed you for the rights to the article, its your to do whatever you want.

the only thing that would prevent you is if the article site had some thing in its TOS that said it had to be original and non circulated.

Yes ultimately it would get treated as duplicate content, however I heard reports that the duplicate filter takes quite a while to kick in, and people have seen multiple backlinks from one article.

The duplicate filter should mean only the first article found will count in the long term.

It means no need to worry about penality of duplicate contents. And get backlinks + visitors by submitting same article to all sites.

I wrote an article [here] about it.

Don't worry about other websites getting hit with dupe penalty--that's them.

If you wrote the article yourself you can submit it to up to 999 article directories

Yea, but you waste your time and since it is viewed as duplicate content the backlinks do not help. Backlinks from duplicate content hold no weight in my eyes. Not only does it hold no weight but the links re from a site that is unrelated to yours. The traffic you get from these links is minimal since they are just a bunch of free article directories.....

Sorry I don't see the benefit. I own a article directory and a loooong time ago I tried the whole submit your article to hundred of places idea. Sure it will get you a bunch of temp links but the links are useless and the traffic you get in minimal at best.

Instead... Keep your articles for your own site don’t submit them to these free article directories. Once you do the article is worthless since its just seen as duplicate content, not to mention the link comes from a site that is unrelated to yours.

If your going to submit your article to websites, choose one or two large ones that will use your article and that have REAL visitors.. This way you get a link that counts and you get real traffic from people REALLY interested in your article.

    Thanks Lorien -

Well I’m not one of those writers so expect a bunch of typos and bad grammar from me.

I have been a Sitepoint person for years, I always liked the idea of digitalpoint and always secretly visited it :). I felt it was time to start posting.

    Thanks for the welcome!

I don't agree with it being useless, but then again, that's based on my own experience. I can't say that it will be worthwhile for you or anyone else.

Like any other marketing technique, you have to learn how to utilize it properly for your needs and it may not even be something that fits in the scheme of things for you.
