Safe No. of new backlinks per day- 5 or 100+

When add backlinks do you look sitewide or url specific? In other words if a safe number of new backlinks per day is 5, is that for the entire site, or a specific keyword? I am trying to get backlinks for an e-commerce site that has over 5K products so 5 backlinks per day sitewide is basically pointless if you do the math.
5000 urls x 5 backlinks per day = 25,000 per day ( not that I would do that, even if I could)
    versus
30 (days) x 5 backlinks site wide =150 per month

Also, I have been told that anymore than 5-6 backlinks per day sitewide will make google suspicious. I see opinions that say that hundreds a day is OK. My site is eight years old, 45K backlinks as I assume that makes some difference.

Theres no given number, it all depends on how famous your site is. For example, if your as famous as facebook.com then you can expect 500 to 1500 backlinks a day, whereas a new site thats not as famous can expect about 10 backlinks to maybe 30 a day.

well, but in reality those 5-6 links per day won't get indexed at the same time. So how many? I personally get 10-20 links per day, and my websites are still doing fine.

I agree with ObliviousOne. I think it is relative to your domain, your past link building patterns and your future link building patterns. I think a safe rate of link building is one that you can consistently keep up for a while. You should be fine with about 100 links a day. Just don't overdo it and get thousands of links all at once. Also make sure you vary your link anchor text.

There is no limitation from any SE but if you get 100 links in day then this heppen. Crawler visits and revisits a website after every 10 or so days........wen after 10 days it will find a link inc for around 1000 in just a shot time period thus it wil think your site as spam and will fix you in google sandbox

The key is "natural" if you get 1000 links in one day all at the same URL and anchor text the penalty will come..

It depends on industry and time online as well. A new site can catch the penalty alot easier then one with link popularity and trust already established.

If the site is new I would be more careful and limit links on a daily basis and always use a differnet URL and anchor text when linking.

Start steadily, build up steadily, once you're on a roll, don't stop. You've got to maintain the flow. Mix up the anchor text and URLs and link sources. Sitewide's look more natural if they're URL based and point to the homepage.

If you're already at 45k I'd say you could handle:

    Month 1: 2k new links
    Month 2: 4k new links
    Month 3: 6k new links

Maybe even more. Keep building at that pace, increasing each month, you should be OK.

Let's be honest though, if you're building these quantities of links, you're trying to manipulate the SERPS, so you need to be careful.

Different industries can tolerate different approaches.

sometimes adding too many links too quickly can cause a backward movement in SERP
steady flow over time with links from the most relevent sites possible will work.
I have not yet discovered how to add a 1000 links a day without using some Link service and Im always a bit suspicous of services that say you can get 5 million links overnight.

if you have an entrenched 8 year old site, I'd be a bit careful about how fast you add them. Wouldn't want to have to wait another 8 years, would you!???
