Rather than paying every month 200 bucks on dedicated server, I've decided to buy a computer and run proxies off my own server. Does any one have any idea on how to install a server for proxies? I know how to make a regular hosting server with CentOS, just for hosting normal pages, but for something heavy, like proxy, do I need to use some special software on the server?
Depends on what kind of proxy you are running, you've provided hardly any details of what your running. Really, if your running your own server from home - your residential connection is going to run out of bandwidth. Also,do you really want people relaying there possible illegal traffic through your home connection? CentOS with lampp will be able to run any PHP proxy script fine, depending on load.
Running a server on your home network? You are asking to be hacked, which can lead a hacker into your personal computers on your network. Giving them access to a lot of personal information, and risking all of your data on your computers. I know that it is not un-heard of, but I HIGHLY suggest that you stay away from this. Lastly, unless you have a business plan from your internet service provider, it is most likely against the TOS. I know that it is against Comcast's TOS.
Thank you for responding, The bandwidth and permission to run a proxy from ISP is not a problem. I plan to use Glype web proxy. Also, what ways would you suggest to prevent the hijack of the server? Any security tips and software to install?
ip tables management - apf, mod_sec, snort+acid ( IDS ), chkrootkit & rkhunter ssh2, ssh keys only, no root, restrict SU, restrict binary usage, binary monitoring. eth0.us, webhostgear.com, google.
actually i had this on my mind before, to have my own proxy on a vps (vps cost only 20-50usd). but since proxy isn't allowed from my web host and from almost all web host, what I did is ssh tunneling. so my vps serves as a proxy without installing any app. http://borosenclave.com/putty-ssh.php
