Running out of SEO patience!

This is just a rant, so bear with me, DP friends.

I launched my parenting site several weeks ago. I bought the domain name in November, put up a little related content, and started getting backlinks, mostly on forums.

Today, Google says I have 9 backlinks, yahoo 132, and msn 347.

A few days ago, I was #5 for my primary keyword (parenting advice) on MSN. Today I"m #30. I'm nowhere on G or Y, but getting hits from obscure keywords.

In April I got 29 hits from msn, 8- Google, 1 from Yahoo.

I've submitted articles, and varied the internal links in my resource boxes.

Thank goodness I have a "stickY" movie on my site, over 70% of this month's traffic has come from "Direct links or bookmarks" that I'm taking to mean people are forwarding the URL because of the inspirational Animal School Movie on my homepage.

Well... I've been doing most of the right things, no? Original, useful content, updated 2-3/ week. Getting links with my keywords as anchor text.

Yet, I'm feeling impatient! I had 482 unique hits in April, and earned about 10 Adsense dollars, and had 25 newsletter sign-ups.

Are my stats good... or am I impatient? Or both?

    I want more traffic NOW!!!

Thanks for listening. And posting this made me feel better about procrastinating cleaning the kitchen.

    Cheers,

    ~Ellen

this is all very good, but you need to make sure you keep working at it. you can never do enough.

here's some quick suggestions incase you haven't already done them:

    - submit to as many directories as possible using varying anchor texts. if you can find directories that accept deep links (i.e. http://www.YourSite.com/section/) you can target some articles and/or content directly, which is also good.

    - write some articles and submit them to as many article submission sites as you can. in these articles you can deep link to your internal pages (and your home page) using varying anchor text

    - since your site has good, unique content, you may want to try press releases (see prweb.com) if you haven't already.

    - try to write content that is not only good, but that you also think people will WANT to link to (maybe they're funny, unique, surprising, etc). then you should start getting some natural backlinks with are (imo) the best.

    - if you have anything relevant try digging at digg.com

    - repeat the above and visit the forums alot to learn :)

    good luck!

Yes. A few weeks is nothing for one website among millions, no matter how good you think it is.

Aim for the long haul and make decisions for site promotion based on a plan to be around 5-10 years from now. Do that consistently and you'll do fine.

Yes you are impatient. Your site was launched say a couple of months ago, and domain name may have been in Google Sandbox. So your stats are not that bad at all.

I am with minstrel, aim for the long haul. There are no short cuts and quick fixes in this industry.

Yes indeed, being patient does not mean you just sit and wait. You can do a lot of things before worrying about ranking and traffic. Develop site contents, promote site, linking, press release, etc.

There are various views on sandbox with one view saying that there is no sandbox at all. Since sites take time in getting authority and hence they take time in ranking. Hence the sandbox.

Second view is that google ranking algorithm while calculating rankings factors in timestamping of published pages and discounts the recent pages using a formula. Hence the sandbox.
However, We tend to side with the first view and believe that THE ONLY WAY to get rankings, Sandbox or no Sandbox is to create authority in the site with the help of good content and good links. Rest are all fads and speculations.

Ellen, IMHO your results are quite good for less than 1 month website. The thing about search engine and Google in particular is - the more content you have, the more they love you. On my blogs I notice that search engine traffic increases once I hit 100, 200, 300 posts. So be patient and keep up the good work!

Damit, I was going to interject a "Compar" rip with Minstrel in mind and then thought, nah, why rock the boat. I give enough crap to people in General Chat.

Then from out of no where! The more I read your posts Minstrel, the more I like Canada. You're restoring my faith.

I used to feel guilty about giving compar a hard time so I tried to give him a bit of a break in acknowledgement of his advanced years. Then one day when someone was ripping into him I green-repped him with a short note of support. Instead of a simple thanks, in return the grumpy old bastard red-repped me.
