Running adsense on affiliate site: Is it a good idea?

What is your opinion on this? Just the other day I noticed an adsense ad running on one of my site that I have created basically for affiliate sales. The ad was of another affiliate competitor (No, I didn't click the ad , could make out with the ad wordings it had).

So I was thinking that it is actually highly probable, if you run adsense or other ppc, that your competitor affiliate's ad run on your affiliate site because it will have identical or similar keywords. So, is it a good idea to run adsense or any other ppc ads on affiliate sites as it might draw away visitors to the competitors site if they click on the ad. Granted you get paid for the click but hey, its a loss of a potential sale which would have been much much more profitable than the few cents I get for the click ..

So, is running adsense on affiliate site is a good idea? What's your take?

I think it's bad running it on a real company store, but for an affiliate store, no. I used to think it was, I mean the last thing you want to do is send traffic somwhere else.

But, I have found that having adsense and affiliate stuff together can double your earnings.

I have been seeing more and more affiliates running adsense on their sites lately. The standard advice to the newbie has always been never put adsense on an affiliate site as it could cost you a sale. I wouldn't put it on a specific landing page that you were sending traffic to that is promoting your specific offer. BUT!

More and more these days Google is all about content so the one or 2 page review site isn't going to get it. You can still do your review pages but content is king. Google is looking for the most relevant content filled site for the search term. I have always felt that way about my sites, give great content so I don't see any reason to not put adsense on some or all of your non-sales pages.

I have never done a pure content/adsense site to try to go for the adsense bucks, but I want to. I also want to have some affiliate offerings on the site too. I don't see any reason why you can't have both if you do it right. You might not make the affiliate sale but 4 or 5 clicks on your adsense may get you real close to your commission anyway if you are targeting the right keywords.

I think, but you may need to research this more but I think you can keep certain ads from appearing, so for example if you are promoting Frank Kerns Mass Control you can block other Mass Control ads from appearing in the adsense but you would get other similar ads promoting other marketing products.

This is just my 2 cents but I am really interested in hearing more about this as I am interested in making some adsense bucks, not just a few pennies but some decent cash!

If have some content on the site, and you would be ok (if we are talking about Google TOS).

As for Adsense being less profitable than making an affiliate sale, it all comes down to EPC. Adsense can be more profitable in some cases if your affiliate offer doesn't convert well.

it's not worth to running adsense for a few dollars,
affiliates are the objectives of your business.
