Running a directory is a pain in the ass!

Biz-Dir was orignally a MFDC directory, then I got a PR5 without even really trying and I thought it might be worth taking it a bit more seriously and decided to start marketing it, recently I have done the keywords and and description tags for every single category (major pain in the ass), made a sitemap (pain in the ass) and now because I keep hearing that it has to all be unique content I have started re-writing all of the sites descriptions which is proving to be the biggest pain in the ass of all, only another 80 or so descriptions to re-write, I am a very lazy SEO (I don't even touch sites usually, I just email changes to designers) and the two words Hard Work were not a part of my vocabulary untill I started working on my directory a week or so ago, I must have spent a good solid 48-72 hours working on it in the last week or two, I could optimise 10 or more sites in that time, I just hope it all pays off.

I think it will pay off.

Also, you're just starting. For any new directory, or any new site in general, there is a large upfront investment of time (and usually money as well).

I worked 36 hrs at a stretch (except fooding and natures call) when I opened my new directory on 28th just to verify that people submitted in the right categories and followed guidelines/ You are right --its an ass.:(

It took me two years to make my first site, and it still needs work. 72 hours?, sounds like a holiday ;)

I am sure it will pay off for you.

It'll feel good when you're done with it; much easier once it is done and you only have to create them for your new listings. I feel it's definitely worth the effort.

Yea. I am sure it will pay off. Your hard work will get its reward.

Having a unique description for your Categories is always good. SE certainly likes it :)

I already have them for my Top categories and I am going to add them to sub categories in this week end :)

Well, my girlfriend is a pain in the a too, but I still keep working to make things better. Treat your directory the same along with any other site you get involved with. If it was easy then there would be no fun in it :).

my question still remains. Hope much do the categories description affect your SEO? Cld the time spent doing this, be put to more worthwhile efforts? Of course, the upside is, these category descriptions remain with you for a very very long time......

despite my uncertainties, have started the painful process as well and will do alittle at a time or i will go crazy. Hopefully, the rewards will be more tangible as time goes by. As the chinese saying goes, 'if you are not afraid to persevere, you can grind a metal bar into a needle' ;)

I've found that effort = reward in everything in life. Sometimes you make a lot of effort and the reward doesn't come immediately, or when you expect it, but it will in time :)

unfortunately, think what you said occurs only in the ideal world. I've known lots of ppl including myself who have put in tons of effort in some endeavour only to find out it was a futile path with no future. Guess, these are painful but necessary life's lessons...
