Hi all, I'm planning to launch soon a Directory site, so I was wondering if there are any things that I should know about? My plans are: - a custom directory engine developed by me. - not just a site directory, but a business directory, with text & contacts. - maybe some premium listings (still thinking about payment methods). Are there any things that I should know about? Like any difficulties, dangers, mistakes? All feedback is welcome!
Spend some time reading in the directories forum. You may have to go back a ways to find really useful discussions IMO. Bottom line though, directories are a lot of work for little return - especially in the beginning. I'd suggest you volunteer at one of the established directories like JoeAnt, Skaffe or so for a while and see if it is really something you will enjoy doing. BTW, phplynx is a decent script out of the box for a business directory. You can experiment with the free version.
