Riya, a Redwood city, California, based company is being looked by Google for a $40-60 million purchase.

What's Riya and why is it better than Flickr?
Riya is a photo-sharing product that offers "face recognition" of photos. Their technology automatically tags people in photos so you can search for the photo you want. Now, let's talk about how Riya is better than Flickr. Riya's technology has the ability to differentiate whether a person is male or a female! Sounds interesting? Read on... Not only does it recognizes faces, but their system can also recognize text such a street signs etc. and also group by subject, date and more.

Currently Riya is in alpha testing stage, and signups are by invitation only! Welcome Web 2.0

That is one freakin' scary rumor. Imagine your friends tagging an image of you with your real name -- and where ever an image of you shows up (or whenever someone wants to know who's on a picture they took at last weeks anti-establishment-demo), there is your name with it ... woah. scarry!

Google likes to purchase small companies more than the bigger ones, so it makes sense, but why google needs face recognition?

Because they love to work on complex algorithms, innovate new technologies and at their heart is "Search", so any product that relates to Search, they WANT IT like right away, right now. Sometimes I hate these megalomerates dominating a major part of our lives. Man!

i agree that theres potential for a huge "invasion of privacy issue".

However as long as i have the ability to define at the picture level what is scanned for extra details and what is not ill have no problem with it.
