Rules for Riciprocal Linking

Hi, I have a few questions... are there any rules for reciprocal links...?...

1.) Should you only accept reciprocal links from websites with similar content? If you link to random websites that having nothing to do with your subject or content will that harm you in the long term?

2.) Is there a limit to how many reciprocal links you should accept on your site?

3.)If someone emails you to exchange links and the page with your link on has over a "100" other links on the same page- is there ANY benefit at all in linking?

4.) What do you have the look out for when exchanging links, what are the dangers?

    Thanks,
    James

Some people are now downgrading recip linking. Google is smart enough to detect these types of links. I don't think there is a penalty, but I just think the links won't count as being good.

I still think there is a small place for recip linking. I would just rather have a lot more 1-ways. For example if a very reputable site wanted to trade links with me, I would not decline.

    Similar content is best.

I like to keep it less than the number of 1-ways.

I would not link with this person. Google states in their webmaster guidelines to keep links on a page to 100 or less.

Don't link to bad neighbors, spammers, etc. Maybe someone else can shed some light on how to detect sites of this nature.
