I have not done anything other than put the feed on my site and there are many other sites that have picked up the feed and send me traffic. It's really cool.
One thing you can do is pay $25 to feature your feed at syndic8.com - I did it and I notice several hits on my feed now - from things like magpie and newsgator that I didn't have before. It's $25/week and I'm not sure if I'd do it right now considering syndic8's recent scandal, but they seem to be back to normal now. Make sure you get your RSS listed in any other feed sites you can find too. You aren't going to get 1000 subscribers to your rss feed that way, but one a month from various sources helps generate traffic IMO. I see it as a tool the same way I see directories.
Add it to the yahoo list on my yahoo program and have you and a friend or two add the feed to your yahoo home page.
