Hi Guys, I need some advice w.r.t RSS feeds integration in my website. I am planning to develop a "news" section which will show news from feeds like yahoo, msn, fifa etc. But recently I read some articles on the web which state that news RSS integration on your website requires prior permissions to be taken from the respective RSS feeds owners. 1> Do I need to email all the above webmasters and ask for a permission to integrate their feeds in my website ? 2> Can I show PPC ads on the page on which I am using the feeds ?
It depends entirely on each rss feeds allowed usage. You have to review each one. Many prohibit commercial usage, which means you can't have ads or any other type of revenue generated.
Thanks for the reply mjewel. I would like to share some information on RSS I found for the various sources. Yahoo - http://news.yahoo.com/rss Attribute news to "Yahoo! News." Only non-commercial use(So I have used Yahoo News rss non-commercially in my website) Fifa - http://www.fifa.com/newscentre/rssfeeds/index.html Attribute news to "FIFA.com" No statement on non-commercial use (So I will use Fifa.com rss non-commercially in my website) MSN - Did not find any informational page on RSS usage. But in any bing RSS you can read the copyright notice. Which states "These XML results may not be used, reproduced or transmitted in any manner or for any purpose other than rendering Bing results within an RSS aggregator for your personal, non-commercial use. Any other use of these results requires express written permission from Microsoft Corporation." (So I will not use bing rss in my website) SouthAfrica.info - http://www.southafrica.info/news/2010feed.xml No copyrights information in rss xml. http://www.southafrica.info/news/rssfeed.htm page does not state any thing about RSS integration in website so I have sent an email requesting for permission. Please review the news section on http://www.2010fifawc.com/ Is it fine if I show ads on other sections like homepage, photos, teams etc leaving apart the news section ?
You may have a problem with fifa but the rest would be fair play I recon. Check their terms of use, it usually tells you. Or email them just to make sure. I see no reason why they wouldn't let you if you leave the links to their articles, surely thats the whole point of an rss feed.
This is what Fifa requires for RSS use as stated on this page http://www.fifa.com/newscentre/rssfeeds/index.html . . . . "Can I use FIFA News feed on my site? If you run your own website, you can display the latest FIFA.com headlines on your website using RSS. We encourage the use of FIFA RSS Feeds as part of your website, however, we do require that the proper format and attribution is used whenever FIFA content appears. The text you need to publish next to RSS Feeds must read 'FIFA.com News'. You may not use the FIFA.com Logo or the FIFA Trademark. By using the FIFA.com RSS feeds, you agree to be bound by the FIFA.com Terms and Conditions. FIFA.com reserves the right to prevent the distribution of FIFA.com content and FIFA.com does not accept any liability for these feeds."
Yahoo / Fifa RSS feeds which require non-commercial usage.. So if I put no ads on the news section but can I put ads on pages other than the news section ?
"The feeds are provided free of charge for use by individuals and non-profit organizations for personal, non-commercial uses." It would appear the site itself has to be non-commercial, but you could ask about your situation.
That is a great question. The legalities of syndicating RSS feeds are unclear. Here is a great article that delves into the issue: http://www.feedforall.com/rss-copyright-debate.htm
