Can someone explain how exactly a RSS feed could help increase visitors? and what it does? I don't really understand it. I have them on my blogs but not on my computer store - should I have?

What kind of person would use an RSS feed and for what purpose?

It really depends on what your site is. I have a retail site where having a feed does not seem to really benefit me at all. While I have a classified ad site that has the new listings on it and it has quite a few subscribers.

feed are like subscriptions to your magazines.....with the link of your blog in it.....if people like it then they'll visit your site through MAGAZINE(feeds).........as nowdays you see ads in magazines.....there are advertising companies for feeds too that publish ads to your feeds (like FAN,bidvertiser etc).

If I am wrong then correct me....don't sue me.hehe...

An RSS Feed allows people to subscribe to your site in a way that they receive updates. If you want people to view your website content more than once, this is the way to do it. Think of it as an advanced bookmark.

If you use Feedburner, you can put Adsense on it.

As explained by cash machine. If someone visits your site and finds it useful enough , they will want to return for more information.

If you have an rss feed , they can use feed readers ( say in Firefox has one built in..) to see when your site is updated.

On a sideline.. If you submit your feeds to syndication sites like pingomatic , black hat webmasters use the feeds as content on their own sites , but generally will include a backlink to your site to avoid any copyright issues.

An rss feed is always better to have if your site can generate one :)

I use RSS in two different ways on my mashup sites.

    1) I include an RSS feed of relevant news or blogs in a box on my pages, which helps convince the search engines that I have plenty of targeted and regularly updated content.

    2) I generate RSS feeds of my lists of products, which I can then paste into my other sites (e.g. blogs) to increase my backlinks.

RSS feeds are an easy way to get fresh content and links for PR.

Check out www.feedburner.com to see what you can do with an RSS. They setup mailing lists, syndication feeds, feed advertising, and alot of other cool things for free on your behalf.

Additionally, Firefox has the feed plugin, and the new version of IE has a dynamic feed reader which updates whenever you load IE.

Also, most news websites will read your feed for updates (i.e. Google News) and syndicate it.

on a side note...does anyone know how to fully check how a Wordpress RSS would look? I kind of failed to use the -more- tag on all of my Wordpress pages, so I was hoping that only the title would show up in RSS...but was worried that there might be some kind of way for someone to just scrape entire pages and put it on their site. I tried it out myself, and only saw titles as a result. I was mostly concerned because many of the pages have video embedded in them, or lots of images.

    http://www.yoursite.com/feed/

That will load your RSS feed, assuming wordpress is installed as your homepage, otherwise just go to /feed/ in whatever subfolder it's in.

I have found that feedburners email subscription is the most effective thing you can do RSS wise to keep people coming back.

rss feeds are a way for you to follow a site or blog when it's updated. It's not a way for money making.

Yes I realise this but it was more whether or not from a marketing/SEO angle if it was required.

It's good to get a subscription type base. There's a lot of different ways you can use it to increase traffic, but the best thing it's used for is showing your users when you update and makes your site more usable.

rss feeds are basically to build readership to your site/blog its not easy to build traffic for a site but rss feedsubscribe via email is a way to get returning traffic since these are the people who got interest in your content and will come back more if you publish anything great again
