Great... Not sure that will be needed. But if it is, that's easy to do. 9 more needed. Instructions will come via PM when we hit 20 people. 8 more needed. Great. 7 more needed.
Thanks for the input. Ideas and questions are always welcome... I guess, as I read your response, I think a couple things: By your interpretation of Google's 'principle', there should be no off-site SEO. If that's your view, you probably would think of almost everything discussed in DP as black hat. I don't know anyone who takes that view anymore (they did a few years ago). I do respect your view, but I disagree with it. Again, I'll quote Google's webmaster guidelines: If you syndicate your content on other sites, make sure they include a link back to the original article on each syndicated article. Even with that, note that we'll always show the (unblocked) version we think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you'd prefer. Our View: RSS is built for syndication. There is nothing black-hat about RSS, period. However, getting your RSS feed noticed is about as hard (if not harder) than getting your website found. The project here is to help people get their RSS out to more end-users and categorize them under specific subject headings. This will provide a service to the end-user who is searching for specific feeds on specific topics (basic RSS directory function). This provides a service to the publisher because they can reach more RSS outlets with less work. So, in the end, I see it as completely white hat and a win-win - with the end user in mind. This is not a link exchange. This is RSS syndication. Hope that helps... P.S. We'd be happy to include xmlrpc as well. I thought more hosts used FTP though.
Perfect. 6 more to go folks and then we'll run a test... Who else is interested in joining our RSS syndication network?
you could be right. Like I said, I think it's a neat idea, I just know that the Big G 'shoots first and asks questions later'. I don't think you're right about free hosts and ftp - after all, for xmlrpc all you need is php. Lots of free hosts have that. I've even been finding loads recently that offer fantastico / wordpress installs . Amazing. Good luck with it!
Thanks... We actually want to avoid WordPress / XMLRPC because there has been so much from Google about SPblogging. I think they are actually targeting that area heavily in the anti-spam team (and probably should)... We want to be as clean as possible and stay focused on RSS with this project. But thanks for your thoughts.
So, how are we going to do this, one of the servers has a master list and the rest use php to reference the master server code?
Great question. It's a little more involved than that.. There is one central site where this will be administered from. This site will: 1) House all the login information for the RSS syndication points (I'm calling them nodes) 2) Pull all the RSS feeds in initially for processing and send them to the nodes. I want to avoid PHP and stick with pure HTML to avoid any php version issues between hosting sites. Also, I know there are issues with certain hosts and PHP file permissions. FTP is permitted on all hosts (as that's how most webmasters generally push their code out). So we'll use FTP.. As said at the beginning, to utilize the RSS syndication network, you will be required to register at a free hosting site and put that information into a registration form... You will also put your RSS feed in that form. Both will be validated. This will all be outlined in a PM when we hit 20 people on the project. Cheers.
How do you accomplish this with pure HTML? Do you have a mock up of the code yet? Have you tested it? I'm a web developer, so its interesting to me
Great question... Yes, we have a mock up of the code. We're doing our own testing. Then, when we get to 20 people, we will do some public testing here in the forum. I'm sure we'll find more bugs. But also hoping that the public feedback (positive, we hope) will interest more people in joining the RSS Syndication Network... To answer your question, you can't.. You need to script the "brains" of this. But the end sites can easily be HTML generated by your script. Still need 6 more people to run the beta....
It's free right? If so, I am happy to put in 15 minutes of work and get a bunch of backlinks.. I am in. Tell me what to do.
Yes. Correct. Free. We don't want any money. You will need to build two accounts: A free hosting account, and an account at our site to register your RSS and hosting info... But this should take about 6 minutes.
Very cool. That means we need only 4 more to test this thing... Our code is looking good. We're going to build a bunch of syndication points ourselves - which will help you get your RSS to more places right off-the-bat...
Can't quite tell if that's another person interested, or just a forum hopper.... Let's call it 1 more between the last two posts. I would still like 3 more people who will commit to giving us 10 minutes of their time in return for a bunch of backlinks....
