Hi.... My sister and I run a game site (www.wytheria.com). We are looking to hire a coder to clean up our site. People say they have a hard time navigating, sometimes important game messages are missed, and we don't really have a standard setup for swf, text, and the different options that appear with each page. So basically, I will do ALL finished graphics, but I'd like help designing an interface, and general help with organizing, and making the site look more clean and professional (but remember this is a family oriented RPG so it should be fun looking, not corporate). You may need to set up an account on the site and explore/play around on it to understand what exactly I need. I don't really want to hire a programmer who doesn't think this sounds fun! Because I'd prefer people who work on the site to enjoy it like I do. It's all good fun Right now my sister and I do every bit of the writing, coding, art, flash, and flash coding and animation that you see on the site. It's a LOT of work for two people. I need: Nice interface design - I will do graphics (probably flash) Page clean-up and organization - again I'll do needed graphics Character selector - not sure what this would be coded in - but I will do graphics for this as well. Allow players to choose gender, skin color, eyes, nose, face, hair style/color, clothing etc etc... and code a support application that allows them to buy new clothes and accessories for their character with game money. SHould work with our existing mySQL database . Think Giaonline forums (theirs are programmable gif images) but I would also find a flash application except able. And I would like the source file so I can edit the colors and such if we ever decide to change the 'theme' of the site. I would be happy to sign an agreement saying I will not give, sell, copy, or whatever else the source code. I only want it for my own personal use on the site. Big jobs... I'd like as many price quotes for one or both as I can get.

Okay could any of you maybe post some examples of what you've done? I am REALLY impressed with any turn arounds in under a week. I know the character selector thing has GOT to be a challenge, even for an experienced programmer. But I could be wrong. I'm having a hard time deciding how I should choose a programmer. It is important to me that not even one little bit of our code gets out of our hands and therefore I need someone with a good reputation and skills. I am willing to pay for these things So far, I have no reason to be suspicious of any of you... but I would like to see some work to help me decide.

So far I've only got two quotes so far, and one who I'm waiting on more information from. I'd like more quotes and urls to sites you've coded as examples, please? I want trustworthy, quality, no need to be a speed-coder, but good. I am willing to pay what is needed for this, but I need to see some work.
I'm about 90% sure the people who have all ready posted have no idea of the scope of what you are requesting when it comes to the "avatar selector". I would guess this project alone would take around 20 hours to develop in the easist way possible. The more difficult approach would be using AJAX and would take roughly 30 or more hours. A see a number of problems with the site I would suggest fixing, first and formost the registration/first login is very confusing and would keep many new players out. Having multiple p ages for user name and then password is very strange and difficult too understand. The require setup page is very broken Took me about 2 minutes too realize the button was no at the bottom of the page. Your flash buttons really should have text that pops up when you mouse over a button. Since you do not know what the buttons do until you click on them its pretty difficult too figure out. I'm sure you know about all of this but I figured as being a developer I should let you know exactly what too expect. I'm sure the character creation could be done for cheaper using flash and would suggest simply posting a job on rentacoder.com for a flash base character generator. Trying too get the work done here will most likely just mean you will get scammed.
I was gathering a little of that from the responses I was getting. I hired one guy to do it, paid him half up front, and never saw him again. I have a feeling it was out of his ability range and he didn't want to have to give me back the money after he figured out it was beyond him. (I woulda probably made a deal with him on that for something else - but he never spoke to me again). Anyhow, you may be right. I will check there too because I'm serious about this project, and i don't want to get ripped off. Thank you for the advice, and you're right, I know about the text on the buttons issue (but I was thinking of having the interface redesigned and then I'd redraw buttons that matched it), and some have reported registration issues.. nad since that is first impression, we really need to tweak that. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond with information. It's pretty helpful Since hiring a programmer is pretty new to me.
