Im looking at starting a browser based game soon which uses a engine set around a gangster style game. If you have never played basically you fight and do crime to improve you stats etc Well i was thinking would it be better and more unique if it was a space age style game but following the same basic idea E.g. instead of stealing a car you would steal a space craft and fight androids etc Whats peoples ideas on that Thanks
Have only ever briefly looked at one online "text based" RPG and whilst it would be an interesting project to code I have to say I found the game fairly poor to play (of cause it could just have been a bad version) but short of programming millions of lines story I cant see a quick way to improve it. If there is any market for text based RPGs then there will almost certainly be a market for a sci fi based one as sci-fi as per gangster genre has a large following.
I actually would lean towards sci-fi, since there are a few somewhat established browser based gangster/crime games. I would personally suggest some set of teamwork though, or it'll have a hard time getting a good, steady community. Maybe have a gang with different positions (boss, lieutenant, hitman, enforcer) to get a group effect going. I might just be fondly remembering my old days on Utopia though.
I have decided i will lean towards the sci-fi style game will post here to show my result if people are interested also whats the best way to get users once done do you reckon. Just like advertise on forums etc and get people to refer other people by them getting special in game bonus's if they do Thanks
Do you have your own game by any chance so i could have a look at it? Just curious as your name is game producer Thanks
Well, not browser based game - but you can find stuff I've made via my blog (check out the left side menu of the blog... they are listed somewhere there). Some time ago I made free box stacking physics game - Highpiled. Check it out. It's pretty fun.
Are you going to build this from scratch or use a bought in script? It's not an area I know much about, but would like to learn more.
A script and then build up on it As there is several basic game engines that put out the main parts of the game then you just add your own mods and change it around to make it unique. Thanks
Going only a few miles off topic - how do most of these games handle movement? The one I saw allowed you to buy a map to jump between locations or you had N/E/S/W buttons for "random" movement. obviously you could map a grid out and dictate what happens in every single square but this seems very oneous. Alternatively your could have generic squares and then specials for particular triggers. Finally it could be purely random though this doesnt feel very satisfactory. Anyone able to clear this up?
Sorry, didn't quite understand how that game made it but anyway... Depending on the game you simply might not move at all - but sort of like command what's happening. Some browser based games might say that you have X number of actions/movements you can take in one turn. Or, you can have NESW type of movement where you can simply ... well - move.
It is the movement element that I cannot see how can be efficiently programmed or if it is simply random which doesnt feel a very good user experience where one combination gets them somewhere the first time but doesnt the second.
That's a pretty cool idea, I want to start something like that soon. PM me with details.. maybe we can do it together.
mine wouldnt have movement at all as most browser based text ones just involve giving commands and you cant actually see anything just a result on the screen e.g. attack someone then it tells you what happened based on the 2 users stats and im just interested in doing it alone as is more for the fun and experience why im doing it. Thanks
I know they dont include graphical movement but how is "movement" from one location to another done? Or do you intend people to be able to instantly jump to be where ever they want to be within the game world in one go without exploring?
