Roughly how many directories do you think I would need to submit to, so that I can really notice a difference in the SERP's.

If you want to have good benefit From Directory Submissions You have to add your site in more then 1000 directories after that you will get some benefit because directories are totally wastage of time and worthless now a days

It depends if the directories are new or been around for a few months possibly.

Also depends on your competition and obviously your approach to the keywords and phrases your trying to rank for.

Directory submission should only be a small part of your link building campaign. Submitting to thousands of directories that do not have the page you will be submitted to cached is a huge waste of your time. Submit intelligently and only to directories that have the page you will be submitted to cached by major search engines.

Submitting to directories will help you get some long tail search engine traffic. From there you are really depending on the content of your site to attract some "natural" links. That's where you'll really see the benefits. So spend a little time every day submitting to directories, then spend a little more time contacting people who would benefit from your site's content and ask for a link. Then spend the rest of the day working on your content. If you have a good site you'll see some very good results within 3 to 6 months.

You should submit to exactly:

34 - PR4 directories
43 - PR3 directories
76 - PR2 directories

in order to notice a difference in the SERP's :D

Also, pay attention to the rate at which you submit. 1000 submissions in one evening might not be the best way to go. A sustained rate of 10-20/day for two months or longer would be better. Or better still, since there are literally thousands of directories, make it an ongoing project. 10 per day for the rest of your life ;)

Directories are really very helpful in making you rank better in SERP but you should not rely completely on this. Your content and keywords are most important. Try other SEO tricks too.

It depends upon the keywords you are using for your site to promote, if the keyword is more competitive, that means more directories submission.

My advice is to aim for quality and quantity (but quality first). The higher the quality of the directory, the better the results will be. My personal preference is to have around a thousand manually submitted directory submissions for each site I develop. Think of submitting as a daily/weekly discipline and make it a habit that you keep up for as long as you own the site. Good luck!
