Jesse Benton, a spokesman for Rep. Paul's campaign, said the numbers reflect the enthusiasm of Paul supporters.

"Our supporters are energized more than in any other campaign," he said.

... So what does that mean? Is it the end of the GOP? Not a chance. It means the latest candidate to join the first tier with his $18 million war chest is about to surge.

Ron Paul is set to explode on the campaign circuit right before the early contests. His fundraising gives him a legitimate claim to the first tier, while his money will permit him to retain it.

Thanks to perfect timing, it appears Mr. Paul may be the last man standing when the snow melts this spring.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa â€” Imagine a pair of Ron Paul supporters and itâ€™s doubtful that Carl and Leslie Bockenstedt come to mind: The couple is married, middle-aged and Mormon, and neither knows much about MySpace.

Yet here they are, recent rural additions to Paulâ€™s big tent of fresh-faced libertarians, Internet idolaters and dispirited small-government Republicans. Itâ€™s a group that has rallied behind the Texas congressman for months, raising record amounts of money and inventing new campaign methods.

As Iowans prepare to caucus on Jan. 3, a great unknown looms: Can Paulâ€™s crusade expand beyond Internet-savvy enthusiasts to more traditional voters who can be counted on to turn out for Paul on caucus night?

But now the campaign is trying to make a major transition, courting traditional Republican voters like the Bockenstedts, veteran caucusgoers unreachable through Web ads or online Meetup groups. Instead, staff and volunteers are going after them with get-out-the-vote tactics as old as campaigning itself, like knocking on doors.

Nowhere is this transformation more evident than at Paulâ€™s Des Moines headquarters, which for all the talk of the Ron Paul Revolution, now resembles the outposts of the other major candidates. From dawn to dusk, young volunteers telephone Iowa votersâ€”at least 100,000 calls are planned by caucus dayâ€”and dispense and mail literature as fast as it can be printed, nearly 1.25 million pieces so far.

â€œWeâ€™ve got an army marching on the ground, and with our money weâ€™ve also got an air war,â€ said John Zambenini, Paulâ€™s Iowa spokesman, referring to Paul advertisements on 83 Iowa radio stations and television spots in every market in the state.

The campaign has also set up a â€œwar roomâ€ filled with nearly 30 paid staffers, most of them hired within the past two weeks. Their goal is to make sure Paul has regional representatives and campaign coordinators in each of Iowaâ€™s 99 counties, and theyâ€™re about two-thirds of the way there.

The Bockenstedts agree. More people just have to hear Ron Paul, they said, and anything can happen. It worked with themâ€”and theyâ€™re not wide-eyed college activists, but middle-of-the-road Republicans who voted twice for President Bush.

Ron Paul opens Michigan Campaign office in Flint

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is unveiling his first Michigan campaign office installment Thursday in Flint. The grand opening kicks off with a "Ron Paul Holiday Walk-Off" from 11am to 4pm, at which local volunteers will meet and canvass the surrounding neighborhood. After the walk-off, volunteers will return to join supporters from Southeast Michigan and statewide for a rally and open house.

The Flint location, at 3068 Miller Road, off I-75, exit 117B, is the first of two offices set to open this week. On Saturday, the Detroit office in the 14th congressional district will have its ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"Weâ€™re very excited to open our new campaign office in Genesee County," said Paul Michigan state coordinator Leslie Roszman. It was bound to happen: Some smart Republican campaign strategist was bound to see the opportunities buried in the arcane new rules that party adopted four years ago for its Feb. 5 presidential primary.

Those rules turn California from a bastion of plurality-winner-take-all politics to a place that will essentially run 53 separate little primaries, with the leading GOP vote-getter in each congressional district taking three of the state's 173 Republican convention delegates. Another 11 at-large delegates will go to the statewide vote leader and three more will be unpledged.

So far, the major Republican candidates have not bothered to change tactics to take advantage of the new rules. You won't see former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani or ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or one-time Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson or Arizona Sen. John McCain campaigning in West Los Angeles or San Francisco.

They come regularly to those precincts to raise money, but never to pump for votes and delegates.

They underestimate us.

I understand that that's hard to believe: after all, this is the same Ron Paul that has never polled higher than 5% nationally in the RCP average, while every member of the big five has stayed in double-digits since the beginning of December.

However, Ron Paul's support seems to be flat across all states, while other candidates see their support dip heavily in certain areas. Without Paul, candidates who have been polling the lowest of the top five in a given state could shrug it off if they knew they'd perform better elsewhere. But if a major candidate comes behind Paul early on, they are in danger of doing themselves serious harm by losing to an impossible candidate.

Bottom line: Although we may not want Ron Paul to be a factor in this nomination process, he will be. Candidates who have allowed themselves to become weak in early states must take notice of the danger he poses to them, and conservatives should realize that a "Ron Paul protest vote" will have very real consequences for the way this race shakes out.

The campaign started out small, but it's not giving up anytime soon. Pearland area supporters are no exception, as they've engaged in phone banking and letter writing efforts.

Meetup.com groups converged at Pappa's Bar-B-Q in Houston recently to talk strategy, where several groups from the region - including northern Brazoria County - met with an official Paul campaign representative for the first time to discuss common campaign goals and delegate training for the primaries.

The grassroots campaigners had little to no experience in politics, but their passion for Paul's candidacy was loud and clear.

Excitement was palpable and infectious. They shot up from chairs to proclaim why he had their vote - whether it was Austrian economics or a humble foreign policy, everyone chimed in to endorse a candidate who exemplified change, someone whom they could stump for on weekends, wholeheartedly.

Many of the 80 supporters who attended traveled from cities hours away - Caldwell, Conroe, Huntsville, Tyler and College Station - while others awoke from a civic duty slumber, not voting for as long as 20 to 24 years.

"Ron Paul is the only true Libertarian who has a chance, and we have to seize the opportunity," Robert Mayer announced to the boisterous crowd that hooted and hollered in approval. IT consultant and Pearland resident, Mayer describes himself as a philosophical Libertarian who's been involved with the party over the past six years.

Mayer said he initially doubted whether Paul, who ran as a Libertarian in 1988, had a ghost of a chance to win back in March. After witnessing his popularity rise in droves from networking sites and homegrown music videos, Mayer was converted.

"His campaign is truly something special, like nothing I've ever seen in my 25 years of adulthood," he wrote in an e-mail. "Regular folks from diverse political and socio-economic backgrounds are coming together to support a genuine candidate of change, a candidate who says things they've never heard a presidential candidate say before."
