Trevor Lyman is unshaven, wearing a T-shirt and jeans and sitting at the dining table of his rented home. Scattered around him are a one-pound bag of M&Ms, liter-size bottles of soda and a box of Frosted Flakes -- the cereal accounts for his recommended daily allowance of vitamins.

Lyman doesn't look the part of political fat cat. But as he monitors his laptop, money rolls in. Most comes in small increments. In a testament to the power of the Internet as a political tool, the nickels and dimes amount to hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars.

It is all for his hero, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, the libertarian-Republican presidential candidate who has raised more than $10 million in the last few weeks but has yet to hit double digits in the polls.

The 2008 presidential contest is breaking fundraising records. Hedge-fund moguls, Hollywood titans, oil billionaires and the like deliver much of the money.

But when the final accounting is done, Lyman -- little known outside the Internet world of Paul acolytes -- could be among the biggest fundraisers of them all.

I gotta see if my checking account is even still open lol. Hopefully it hasn't been ravaged too bad by the credit card companies yet and there are still a few dollars left. First, Ron Paul will be on Meet The Press with Tim Russert next Sunday AM, Dec. 23rd.

This is big, and likely because the grassroots has been hammering the show to have Dr. Paul on for some time.

Russert can be really tough, I read one blog today saying that he almost made Romney cry on air.

In the university's first-ever mock presidential primary - Wildcats Vote - Obama received 55 percent of the Democratic votes cast, while Giuliani took 29 percent of the Republican votes. Clinton followed Obama, with 17 percent of the vote; John Edwards had 13 percent. Fifty state strategy

It seems to me that, after today, Ron Paul is in the unique position of being able to run a fifty-state campaign. He has the money and the troops and he has gotten this far without much favorable media, and early on, without much media at all. Heâ€™s not currying favor with the GOP elite. Heâ€™s not in it solely to win, which, ironically, gives him the stature that will allow him to win.

In short, none of the reasons why the other candidates--short of money or media or troops or a passion for something other than winning, or needing to suck up to the elites--need to score big early or quickly depart, pertain to Ron Paul.

I alluded to this earlier but the main point is that because of these factors Ron Paul can fight everywhere and pick off votes and delegates while the others have to carefully allocate their scarce resources.

It's like a guerilla war of attrition against a standing army and you know who usually wins those fights.

If Ron Paul runs well everywhere while his opponents pick their spots, that will strengthen his claim to the nomination if no nominee gets 50 percent before the convention.

I'm telling ya folks, this is gunna be big. I can't say he will win, but there are a lot of rumors of something very big coming with the campaign infrastructure, and if they are true, the GOP is going to have one hell of a time not giving Ron Paul the nomination.

In other years, it might not matter that Paul supporters are coming to meetings, said Chet Dow, Whatcom GOP chairman.

This year Republicans canâ€™t coalesce on a favorite candidate, Dow said, and Paul isnâ€™t even close to the top of the list.

â€œItâ€™s wide open,â€ Dow said, which is what could give Paul more local delegates. â€œThere hasnâ€™t been anything like this since 1964.â€

The influx of Paul supporters is being seen by every county GOP group, Dow said, after a recent statewide event he attended.

â€œIn my opinion heâ€™s a Trojan horse,â€ Robinson said. â€œHeâ€™s a (Republican in name only). Thatâ€™s how I feel about that, and Iâ€™ll be upfront about it and I donâ€™t care.â€

During a recent GOP meeting, about 10 Paul supporters â€” nearly all college-age â€” stumped for Paul and offered their services as precinct committee members.

â€œSome werenâ€™t even registered to vote,â€ Robinson said.

Justin McKay, a former Whatcom County Republican Party member now supporting Paul, said the Paul supporters at the meetings are no different from any other Republican candidateâ€™s supporters stumping for their guy at the meetings. And Paul has many conservative stances, he said.

He also sees a benefit to college-age voters attending the meetings to learn about the process.

â€œI think itâ€™s a good, healthy thing,â€ he said.

Robinson said he has no problem with grassroots campaigns, but for him Paul does not represent Republican values. And in many years, he said, not many Republicans come to the local caucuses, which means Paul supporters might be able to take over and send more delegates in favor of Paul to the state convention.

â€œThat should be a red alert to regular Republicans,â€ Robinson said. â€œIf you donâ€™t want your party taken over, you better get involved."

Gotta keep working with our MeetUps, working offline and doing whatever we can. It's going to be a long time before we have a candidate of this caliber to rally behind. Maybe not again in our lifetimes.
