Robots.txt timeout - from Google when downloading my sitemap

    since about 3 days
    every time google tries to get my sitemap
    google seems to fail and displays a

    Robots.txt timeout

    error on the sitemap account "Sitemap Status"

    I did NOT make any major changes the past months to the robots.txt
    file permissions are 644
    the file loads instantly in the browser
    the file is properly loaded as first file when using wget to download my site

    Google is notified - but to expect answer may take days or longer .. if at all

    any clue what could be wrong and how to solve
    or
    any similar experience by others these past days ??
