Are there any risks of getting penalized by google by submitting an article to 500+ sites, with links to my site which itself doesn't contain the article?
Wait until Google index the article on your site, then submit it to the other sites (article directories?) It's a good idea to rewrite the article otherwise it might not get indexed in the article directories and you won't get traffic/backlinks.
500 is a bit excessive! that sort of article popularity is reserved for huge PR (possibly a factor?) sites like the BBC. i'd never submit and identical article to more than 5 sites.
i wouldn't have thought you would get penalized if you didn't have the article's content on your site? Isn't the idea of penalizing duplicate content to encourage original content, ie not just taking content from article submission sites?
Can you elaborate on that? Yes, I thought so too — does anyone else have similar thoughts on this? I don't see how google actually can penalize a site after massive article submissions with links to it — even if the site itself has the article — because then just anyone could vandalize another persons PageRank simply by submitting a lot of articles, containing some of the website content, pointing to his or her site. If it would be a risk of getting penalized due to duplicate content of articles linking to your site, how come so many are using services such as isnare.com, in the case when you pay them to distribute your article to «thousands of opt-in publishers», as they put it?
That's an interesting point about vandalizing a page rank like that, although I think that some submission sites put a limit on how many words you can quote from another source, not sure this would stop the problem though. I'd be interested to hear other people's views/experiences on this. I normally submit articles to around 6 or 7 of the biggest submission sites, and then make sure that any related content on my site is sufficiently different so as not to get penalized. If this isn't the way to go, it would be good to know!
The so called duplicate content penalty is a complete myth. Lagoons full of duplicate content will not get you banned. It might not get your pages ranked well, but it will not get you banned by Google. There's much to much hysteria over duplicate content.
I've done some research now and it seems like you're not in the risk zone of being penalized due to duplicate content as long as your own site doesn't contain what you've massively submitted. However, building a lot of backlinks in a very short time is risky — especially if you're site is new — so automatic submission services (such as articlemarketer.com, isnare.com and similar) should be used with caution, if at all. Personally, I will instead try to write many unique articles and post them at different article directories without further distribution.
I have never, ever had any problems with google dup penatly. I have even mass submitted articles to like 750+ directories, and had no problems at all. Some people say it's myth, some people say it's true, I don't know, maybe.
Great to hear! How many backlinks did you have before these mass submissions? From what I've read, some people get penalized by google if there is a sudden increase of backlinks of that amount, unless you're already in possession of several hundred/thousands backlinks.
great work rag! also, interesting point about building up a lot of backlinks in a short period of time, i hadn't come across this specific point before. Mike
