Rising (or falling) Ad Positions!!

I don't understand it, mostly because I'm new to adwords, but I had an ad which I set up yesterday, made a sale on yesterday and it averaged on the first page. Today I checked it was still maybe 6th position according to my adwords account, but I checked maybe a half an hour later and it's already risen to something like 9th place. Why are my ads slowly (and quickly sometimes) falling off of the top page if I haven't changed anything? Is it just a lot of people are promoting similar keywords and paying a lot more for them I guess is my only answer. It always seems to work that way though, when I start a new ad group, the place isn't too bad, then it keeps falling. Is the answer to keep deleting and starting new ads fresh or something or what?

It sounds like your budget may be too low. Based on your settigns for what part of the day your ads will show (all day or day parting), Google is going to try and calculate how to get your ads out there as best it can. This may mean that your position will fall becuase it is cheaper to land 9th place than 1st. You can also set position preferences to try and keep your ads on the first page. Also, make sure your budget spending is not set at accelerated, which will tell Google to spend your budget as quickly as possible.

It's unlikely that your Quality Score is changing that fast, and I don't see how your budget is relevant.

I would strongly advise that you use the Adpreview tool to see where your advert appears for a given search: www.google.com/adpreview

Google changes the position of adverts if you repeatedly search for the same term, so this can cause your advert to appear much lower when you search than it does if a regular searcher does. They explain this a bit here: https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=71301
