Yup its true! When using a large amount of subdomains on a website for an eCommerce business platform, a Wildcard SSL certificate is a comprehensive and reliable security solution for protection of the main web site and unlimited subdomains.
depends upon ur requirement. but mostly u do not need wildcard ssl for ecommerce website. wildcard ssl certificates are bought by web hosts and then they give their customers a shared ssl certificate from that wildcard. if u are just starting up then u should checkout instantssl by comodo. that is free for 90 days so u can give it a try. U should never go for wildcard ssl if u r starting up, because they are expensive and most of the time people do not need them.
Wildcard SSL is best suited for the website having multiple sub-domains...if your website having no sub-domains and want to secure your online transaction; you can choose EV SSL certificate (recommended for SMBs). Kindly let me know if you need any help in this regards.

I would suggest that you to visit one article awesomely elaborating about the same... Which ssl certificate should you buy for your eCommerce Business? Visit here: http://www.clickssl.com/blog/which-ssl-should-you-buy-for-your-e-commerce-business/
I suggest you get the basic SSL, like Thawte's SSL 123, its for 1 domain only tho. However you can distinguish different sections by using sufolder, for eg: yoursite.com/section1 instead of section1.yoursite.com
I don`t think wildcard certificates are the best for ecommerce, although it offers an infinite number of sub-domains within one certificate - it also has it`s flaws security wise, being possible to run same certificate and it`s private key on multiple servers, giving a fraudulent site an appearance of legitimacy.
