Right side Ad positioning

I have a competitor that is getting a higher position than my client on the right side. It only happens once when you first type the keyword in but than it puts us on top after. Anyway to make sure we're always on top? Does anyone have an answer why the competitor has the 1 position on the first search you do? Any comments would be really beneficial.

Maybe he has a limited daily budget so adwords shows his ad occasionally through the day!

In other words his ad is not displayed for every search.

You can be first bi bidding more than he does or by improving your QS and CTR.

I'm pretty sure I have the highest price... What does QS mean btw? I'm new to this.

Uh, a lot of explaining.First read this http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=9354 is the best help you can get everywhere.

It doesn't matter if you are bidding the highest price, there are also other factors like QS(quality score).

QS can be great,ok or poor.

So if you let's say have a OK QS and you are bidding $0.40 for a click for one keyword for first place on the sponsored ads section your competitor can out rank you with a 0.15 bid with a great QS.

So he get's the first position with a $0.25 less CPC in this example, only because he has a great QS.
