What is more preferable, rich media or text ads? I know a guy who makes good money with only text ads. Although rich media looks beautiful.

Google recommends us to use both text and rich media ads

I know that. But which one has high CTR? Or if anyone has good experience with adsense, what would they prefer?

Can't answer that, there are too many variables. Anything from your industry, your product, the demographic of your customers, your headline, your copy, your marketing strategy, the location where you're placing the ads, your call to action etc etc can all affect the CTR of your ad. Just split-test it and see how it goes. There aren't golden rules for this sort of thing.

I use both and it works better for my site than say Text ads alone.

I prefer choosing both. Usually taking the recommendation from the host company should be better

I don't know exactly which type of ads gives more CTRs, but so far - it's still the text ads that brings earnings.. Maybe it depends on the site's niche or product

We refused to do the rich media ads for a long time because of the industry we were in. We finally decided to givce it a try and our earnings did increase. Our traffic was also increasing at the time, so it is hard to say exactly how much. From the numbers, I would guess we went up between 5-10% by switching.

While the algorithim is not perfect, the longer you use them, the better google knows your clients. It uses that info to decide which ads are more likely to get clicks and when. They want to earn money too.
