Shut down any applications, including IE and optigold before starting. Uninstall any previous versions of java that may be in the system. Reboot. Install JRE 5.x from www.java.com and VERIFY that it is functioning. Reboot. Install jre-1_2_2_017-windows-i586.exe as a normal installation. Open control panel, Java. Select the tab named Java. Under Java Application Runtime Settings, select VIEW. Verify that there are two JRE packages showing there, both the current version of Java and the legacy Java that works with Optigold. Reboot Start Optigold, search under expiration date the current date and test by running a CC payment and if possible a bank debit payment for those customers that are due. Rinse and repeat if necessary. This is a proven method of co-existing two different versions of java on a single workstation. JRE Version 4.x had the option but implimented it poorly and it really didn't work.
