Over the past few weeks I have redesigned the home page and the way the articles are being presented. http://www.survivalboards.com/ What do you think about the icon at the start of the article, and the video a few paragraphs down? Any other suggestions would be helpful, thank you.
The site is pretty good actually. The only thing I would change is the search button for "Search This Site." It currently says "Go," and I would change it to "Search," since your Search Google button also says "Search." So you dont want one to say "Search," and the other to say "Go."
Pretty neat website, really good work.. but you need to work a bit on your header.. try n make it more eye-catching and exciting!
I like it a lot, the design flaws pointed out by others I think are a little bit overshadowed by the good content. So if you get visitors that like the topic, they will likely stay, but I would heed the advice about modding your header. It does kind of blend in the background... With that said I like it, I like the outdoors and camping. This is a good resource, the videos are good too, personal and informative.
Thank you all for your opinions, but I personally like the header. The height of the header might get shrunk a little bit, but I think it reflects what the site is about rather well. The site loading a little slow may come from having to pull the youtube video previews in, that amazon banners, and traffic scripts. But I am going to take a look and see what can be done to speed up the load time. The number of post per page was reduced from 10 to 5. The combination of images and videos being pulled in might have slowed things down. The blog also acts as a portal to the forum. Once people read through some of the post, they should come across a link to the forum. The forum is on a different domain name. And I do not understand what everyone means about the header. If anything it looks a little tall.
This is great, you should like your own stuff, just remember that you want others to like it, especially potential customers. And it isn't about just aesthetics, its about burning your *brand* in their head so they remember your site and come back, sometimes this requires that you put aside your own likes and dislikes and head to your logs. See what the majority of your users are browsing your site with. Mind their screen resolutions, color capbilities and connection speed. - GL. I think the header is better already, the text stands out more now. But I have a question... why put your domain name there instead of a tagline? or a slogan? They are already at your domain right? Also, I didn not experience any slowness, but since you are using WordPress, I would take a look at WP Super Cache, or any of the great caching plugins out there. They make your site load a lot faster if your host's db and processor aren't that fast. Its highly customizable. GL
I think the site has great content and a person cal tell you really have a passion for the subject. I think you should give the forum more attention and encourage people to signup. Maybe put something above the search box. If you really want to go for it, you could simply add an email form from aweber or a list company like that. I think the banner pic is great. Maybe you should experiement with some fonts.
